Using the extended support version of Firefox in general seems like a good idea for stability. However, some sites, like slack.com, say this FF version is too old and won’t support it (or allow it to connect) after 1 Sept 2024. I prefer to get app updates from openSuse, but there’s less than 2 weeks before slack blocks FF 115. As reluctant as I am to install directly from Mozilla, is there anyone with a good experience or hints on downloading the latest FF version from Mozilla?
Thanks
You can use the Mozilla repository. Simply exchange the 15.4 against 15.5 in the URL or use the $releasever placeholder
https://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#Mozilla
And if you want to use the upstream version, it is also easy. No installation needed. Simply unpack the archive and run it as explained in the download/installation instruction.
You can file a request to upgrade Firefox.
Unlikely to happen for Leap 15.5
I get Falkon and Chromium from openSUSE repos. I get Firefox & SeaMonkey from mozilla.org archives (since before openSUSE 10.2), for each of which I have multiple profiles, allowing multiple versions to be open at once. I get Pale Moon from its archive. I use my favorite wherever its adequately functional, others according to website demands or special reasons. There’s no reason I’ve ever encountered that demands anyone stick to using only one browser, or one source for them.
According “Firefox Release Calendar”:
Firefox ESR 115 will reach end of life on October 1, 2024.
Firefox ESR 128 will reach end of life on September 16, 2025.
SUSE shall prepare a major upgrade from Firefox ESR version 115 to 128 and publish this browser upgrade on October 2024. Otherwise SUSE doesn’t follow the spirit of enterprise linux for SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 (SLED15 and SLES15) and openSUSE Leap 15.

You have now some months time to prepare and test this browser upgrade. Prepare now your Firefox Profiles and your about:config lock downs for ESR major version 128!

SUSE has already published their first browser upgrade to Firefox ESR 128.

Only a matter of a few days to Firefox ESR 128 upgrade for SLED15SP5, SLED15SP6, SLES15SP5, SLES15SP6, openSUSE Leap 15.5 and Leap 15.6.
