finishing the installation!???

ive been dying to get on the new SUSE11 distro for a while (currently using Ubuntu) but when it comes to the end of the installation it says “X11 must switch to console to detect video card” “DONT PANIC!” … but then my screen just goes black… i left it like that for a good half an hour.

ive managed to install it on my other pc but i want it on this one!

my pc:
intel quad core 2.4ghz
4gb DDR2
BFG 8800GT OC 512mb
250gb sataII - Vista
260gb IDE - Linux

the other pc (That it worked on!)
AMD Opteron64 2.2ghz
1gbDDR400
ATI x1950pro 512mb
40gb IDE - XP
40gb IDE - Linux

i love how SUSE looks and feels… just wish i could use it now! :frowning:

I think I can not help you. But maybe to help other more knowing people to help you, it would help if you told what video there is in the system(s). To me that would be more applicable to your problem then the size of your memory/disks. :\

i have… mine is an 8800GT 512mb and the working system has an ATI x1950pro 512mb. :\

Try to go into a console and use fbdev instead of the standard driver by starting sax2 with

sax2 -m 0=fbdev

This should give you a picture at least. Then download the gfx-driver from nVidia (the BFG in an nVidia?) and install this one.

i can cancel the auto config thing at the end and load into SUSE… but i have no sound either then :expressionless:

There will be more problems which you don’t see yet. But to solve this SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

Else i suggest let the autoconfig run as far as can, go into a console (ctrl+alt+F1) as root enter runlevel 3 (init 3) fire up sax2 with sax2 -m 0=fbdev when done enter runlevel 5 again.

After that backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and install the driver from the nVidia website and/or experiment with the xorg.conf then.

Hi, I just got back off of vacation and I am going through the various sound threads to see if I can help.

Please advise if you had success following Peter_Srp’s excellent recommendation to follow the audio troubleshooting guide: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

If that does not help you, then please provide us more information. Please start by copy and pasting the following diagnostic script into a gnome-terminal / konsole with your PC connected to the internet:

wget http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/tsalsa && su -c 'bash ./tsalsa'

and when prompted for a password enter your root password. Please try to accurately estimate the number of jacks/plug you have when asked (for example, I have 3 i/o sound jacks on my PC), and when the script is complete it will give you a URL. Please post that URL on this thread.

Also, in addition to the above, please copy and paste the following commands one line at a time into a gnome-terminal / konsole and paste here the output of these commands:
rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

… with that information it might be possible to provide you a recommendation to get your sound working.

well im in the desktop with sound! ive just tried installing nvidia driver from the nvidia repo but when i open the nvidia config from my system menu it tells me i dont have the Driver installed! and i cant set my screen to 1680x1050! :frowning: stays at 1280x1024 :(:frowning:

this is my pc

Congrats to having sound.

Now you have a new problem. I think it is better to make a new thread in the proper (sub)forum with a new selfdeclaring subject. This will bring your problem to the attention of those who know better about this branche of the wonderfull world of Linux problems

ok thank you very much
