Finished a system update and now apps won't start.

Hi,

I finished a system update & now whenever I try to start an app I installed from .rpm (Keybase and IVPN) it shows up an icon on the taskbar & in System Monitor for a brief moment and then instantly closes.

I checked Yast Software Management and the app version in “Installed (Available)” tab is red.
I can run both IVPN and Keybase in the command line, but just the GUIs are acting up as I mentioned above.

This is on Opensuse Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma 5.22.5.

Can anyone help me solve this? I only installed Opensuse a few days ago and I’m new to Linux.

can you open up the console, and run the program for the gui there and paste the output here?

run_keybase outputs this:

Unmounting /run/user/1000/keybase/kbfs…
Unmounting and shutting down kbfsfuse…
Shutting down keybase service…
Starting via systemd…
run_keybase: Success!

Says success but the GUI still won’t launch

Maybe you need a newer one because of glibc2.34?

I have downloaded the latest available keybase version

in yast software - is there another version available? if its red, it mostly means, that the current version is not part of your packages right now. that may break the libs as sauerland wrote. you should install a version that is deliverd by selecting another version in yast when available.
if you dont have a working version in yast, you cloud checkout the buildservice- webpage if there is a version matching.
installing a version via rpms from another distribution is mostly not working very well - i guess you did that.

As the OP said

it is most probably not from any repo and maybe not even installed using zypper, but using rpm. That would make consulting YaST > Software Management something of a challenge ;).

Maybe the OP should first explain where that application is from and how he installed it.

Hi
I suspect it’s an electron based application, a fix is being worked on upstream, just have to play the waiting game…

As a Tumbleweed user, then it’s best to also follow the Factory Mailing List…

With everyone’s help I now realized it’s due to the electron bug. Thanks everybody
Are the devs aware of this?

In that case use openSUSE Leap, not Tumbleweed.

Hi everyone, I too am facing the same issue except it’s with another application but similar type of service - Mullvad. I’m believe I’m on the latest version of the system - Kernel version: 5.14.6-1 & KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.5

I think hcvv may be right on this

Similarly, I also manually download the .rpm file for openSuse and the run it though YaST manually, it’s not a smooth process because technically it’s not an official file for openSuse as it was created for Fedora but it actually installs and the solution usually runs perfectly and has been for a long time even though Mullvad doesn’t officially support it for openSuse. It’s a bit of a hassle upon system start but its okay because the product works so well and it’s so advanced that there are very few companies and products that works so brilliantly. I think IVPN may be the other one as well.

I’m sure the issue stemmed from the release of 5.14; I thought I’d try going back a couple of kernels from bootloader but I updated the system twice this past week and can only seem to go back to 5.14.5 (I think - not an expert) and I’m currently on 5.14.6.

I’m curious wd6746, does IVPN officially support openSuse, what other Linux distros do they officially support and did you contact support yet?
