Hello to the forum from a complete beginner with OpenSuse 11.4 Downloaded FileZilla - also installed via Yast, SoftwareManagement. Success. Shows up as installed (available). So I go to try the exe and it wont run (am using Windows words here as have no idea about Linux language yet). It [FileZilla] refuses to run - sits there with absolutely nothing happening. Did the same install on the WinXP partion and it worked first go staright out of the box - no fuss at all.
EXE files are not used in openSUSE as we use binary files. FileZilla is a loadable program you can find in YaST (enter Root Password) / Software / Software Management. Please include your openSUSE version and desktop used in all problem requests here.

As I posted - Yast - Software Management shows FileZila as being “installed and available”. Includes the FileZilla icon.
It also shows the bold files in /user/ bin that I can also find by navigating there with the file manager.
This version came form the OpenSuse factory - found from Yast/Software Management.
But my problem remains as this - having got the “user/bin/filezilla” visible - how do I get it to run ?
I cannot find any icon or listing in any part of any menu for FileZilla.
(Am responding from Windows as I cannot get the forum post window to show a cursor or allow carriage returns or delete selected text when typing in Linux environment.)
Run “Konsole”, type “filezilla” and press Enter.
Then post any error message you might get.

You say it shows up as installed in YaST. But where did you download it from?
If it’s really from openSUSE Factory chances are that it won’t work on your 11.4, but at least it should show up in the menu.

Which browser are you using?
It should work fine with Firefox or Opera.
And btw. since 11.4 is not supported by openSUSE anymore, you should add the Evergreen repo to still get updates.

The update to latest Firefox seemed to have failed as the old version would continue to run in its place.
My understanding of Linux basics is zero - and very frustrating to search through the online helps.
So am closing this thread as I want to get work done and not have to mess with the machinery.
Thank you for the advice and I appreciate you trying to help but when looking for a tool to do a job I dont expect to have to change its head gasket before using it.
Then you did something wrong.
If you had added the Evergreen repo as I suggested, you would have gotten the latest Firefox automatically via online updates as well.
Oh and btw, what do you need Filezilla for?
You can just use KDE’s konqueror or dolphin as ftp client too…

Don’t try to update, you don’t have the needed experience for that.
Instead, install fresh the current version.

You have to restart firefox after the update - provided you activated
Evergreen repos as you were told.

You can not expect to start using and doing the administration of a
Linux system from day one without training… it takes months at least.
When you do, it is very rewarding, or many of us would not be here.

Thought this thread was ended - but as people are still commenting - here is my pennyworth.
I said I was a beginner with Linux - not with Windows.
I want to learn more and also wish to develop a SQL project connected with my research.
I have now upgraded to 12.3 from iso DVD.
Now trying to get wireless settings to remain - it throws away the wireless key at every opportunity.
Also discovered that I can no longer hibernate the WinXP and then access Linux - just refuses until Windows is shutdown. This worked well with 11.4
And I had followed the advice given on the OpenSuse site about upgrading and checking the current system state - which differs from that given here - but in turn did not seem to match the experience I have had when trying to put this in to practice.
And as one person has chosen to address me in a tone - “as you were told” - my view of this forum and the value of contributions and advice (or instructions?) has deteriorated.

That’s a safety feature designed to prevent R/W access when the windows file-system is in a hibernated state.
Don’t mount the XP partition if you plan to hibernate it. Or mount it read only. Hibernation leaves the Windows file system in a unknown state Writing to Windows like that can cause corruption to the Windows file system.
Making a large jump in versions is almost always a problem since the upgrade does not update config files and programs may not deal with very old config correctly. I always recommend a new install if you are moving more then a single version. Yes it can be done but you need pretty good knowledge on how thing work in Linux
