File Under: N00b Questions - Gnome 3.16 Software App broken?

Hi there friends!

Okay so this morning after several weeks of testing out 13.2 I decided to make the switch to Tumbleweed. I opted to go with a fresh install over trying to do an upgrade from 13.2. Thus far things seem to be up and running for the most part.

However with that being said one of the problems I’ve encountered (running Gnome 3.16 btw) is that the new software app will not allow me to search for / add new programs. When launched the app front page only displays firefox as an option. There are no categories of featured/recommended apps like the version in opensuse 13.2 had. Looks broken to me.

Here is a screen shot to show you what I mean.

Any ideas what the issue is or how I might go about fixing it?

TY in advance for any help you can offer

Well, mine shows “Weather” as featured app instead of Firefox, and if I select it the app apparently freezes.
Something is broken for sure, maybe not yet up to 3.16…

But since Yast-Software works, I think we may wait for this to be fixed.

Thanks for the reply Orso

Someone on the openSUSE subreddit also said they were having the same problem, so looks like it isn’t just us. However, a couple of people on the Gnome subreddit seem to think this is an openSUSE problem as things (according to them) are working just fine in Arch and Fedora. Dunno?

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “But since Yast-Software works, I think we may wait for this to be fixed”

Do you mean fixing this is likely to be a low priority issue and therefore something we might have to live with for while? How long does it usually take for this sort of thing to get fixed in openSUSE?

Lastly, what has been your workaround re installing software in openSUSE?

Thanks again for the help.

Edit: wanted to add that my gnome-software app’s featured app options seems to change sometimes https://i.imgur.com/JpAJqBO.png.

The usual way to install SW in OpenSuse is Yast (the system maintenance application), using its “Software” app.
In Gnome, Just hit the “Win” key and type “Software”, it should appear as a green box on the third place, if you have a standard install.
So yes, maybe the Gnome-app might not be fixed until OpenSuse 13.3 is released…

Last update seems to have fixed it! Yeah for now!

Thanks again for the help friends.
