Hi!
i have set up a laptop with Open Suse and W7 in Dual boot
I have a desktop running W7
I want to share files with the Desktop W7 and Open Suse.
i can share using wired and wireless connection in between laptop(W7) and desktop(W7)
Any help will be appreciated
Short answer is yes you may share files between laptop and desktop machines connected by LAN or wireless technologies. How you share is however governed by many factors. If I understand you right, you are currently able to share laptop(w7) and desktop (w7) so obviously if this is the case you are almost there. What you need to provide is some details about how you have set-up for w7 to w7 sharing so the correct advice can be given to make w7 to openSUSE function.
in W7 i simply turned on file discovery on both systems and shared the drive i needed to.
but here i cannot find head or tail of it.
there were no technical settings in W7
i share an internet connection in between the two systems Desktop(W7) and Laptop(OpenSuse) using a wireless router Linksys WAG120N.
thanks
Do you know the IP address of your desktop ? If so, you may be able to access the files on your desktop from your openSUSE partition on your laptop by opening Dolphin (if running KDE4) and typing in Dolphin’s location bar:
smb://your-user-name-on-windoze@ip-address-of-windoze-pc
where in Dolphin to get the ‘location bar’ one needs to go to view > navigation bar > editable location to bring up the location bar.
One’s Windows7 firewall also has to be partially open (as appropriate) to allow such a transfer, but I assume in your case it is already partially open if the win7 to win7 transfers work.
In the case of accessing the openSUSE PC from your windows PC, you could use an application such as winSCP. You need to install that on Windows7 and then on your openSUSE PC you will need to start the ssh daemon (only once) :
yast > system > system services (runlevel) > simplemode and change “sshd” to YES if not already changed. Then go to your openSUSE firewall and open it up for ssh: Yast > Security and Users > Firewall > allowed services (external zone and select “service to allow” to be “Secure Shell Server”) and click ok.
At least that works for winXP and openSUSE … I assume Win7 is not that much different from a network perspective ?
To get a good link from w7 to openSUSE, you need to pay particular attention to three sets of configs in w7, just like you do in Linux. One is to relax access over the network to the w7 computer (getting to the gate so to speak). Another is to relax network permissions to access the actual resource (e.g. a folder). Another is to relax filesystem permissions to access a resource.
The w7 issues are laid out here: How to Configure Windows 7 for Samba
And if you have issues with Samba, this might help: Samba LAN Primer
Thanks everyone for the replies
I’ll try using Samba to file share coz i think it’s easier than other methods described

sworoopmahapatra;
You need to make a few adjustments to Win7 for Samba sharing. See this Howto:
