Failure to install Tumbleweed

Brand new laptop: Alienware m16 r2 with an Intel ultra core 9, 32gb ram, 1tb nvme storage.

When I insert the usb stick and do the 1-time-menu to boot from the USB stick.

  1. I get to the grub
  2. select install
  3. get a “bunch” of scrolling
  4. starting udev <<<

and that’s it. TW stalls and nothing happens. Waited as much as 20 minutes.

TW with kernel 6.13 is supposed to support the Intel ultra core 9.

Does it have an NVidia GPU, or some other hardware too new to be supported?

Is “starting udev” the exact message, including case? I don’t see that happen here in an ordinary TW boot’s dmesg or journal.

Try using nomodeset kernel parameter.

Thanks but it made no difference

2 gpus:

  1. NVidia gpu: yes, but it’s an older one: the 4060 with 8Gb memory
  2. Built-in Intel arc and the i915 is well support by anything above 6.1 kernel

Not the exact case/spelling:

>>> openSUSE Tumbleweed installation program program v9.3 (c) 1996-2024 SUSE LLC  <<<
Starting udev...

3 dots + 1 space then the cursor stays.

Oops: wrong: it’s: …program v9.4…

Loading basic drivers… should have been next. :frowning: I just booted TW20250319 to check.

@elfroggio try adding the boot options fbdev=1 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau nomodeset to the installation grub options.

  1. Thanks. I’ll try it tonight when I’m back home.
  2. Does this need to be permanently on the grub boot options?

@elfroggio No, just to see if it helps for the installation. Installing the nvidia rpms will add rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau at some point, I also use fbdev=1 nvidia_drm.modeset=1 on the grub line for my setup, going forward it may/maynot be needed for your setup.

No didn’t work :frowning:

Tried both slowroll and tumbleweed and it didn’t worked in neither.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks

Select the text install rather than default and also use the nomodeset option

I want to reply to all that helped.

Now it’s working. This is if other people have similar problems.

The problem was solved by disabling the optimus (the sharing/balancing of the nvidia gpu and the intel gpu), and the install went ahead without a hitch.

Thank you
