Hello,
I installed on a VM a fresh version of 13.2 and everything went smooth so test completed successfully. Then I tried a different test - to upgrade an existing 13.1 version(also VM) to 13.2. The upgrade fails almost at the end when is trying to build the bootloader, that’s what I think. I took a snapshot of the second message as i clicked ok on the first one. This was the 2nd message:
Internal Error. Please report a bug report with logs
Details: Unknown udev device /dev/disk/by-id/ata-VBOX_HARDDISK_VB4aa2d9dc-982e1341-part2
Caller: /usr/share/YAST2/lob/bootloader/device_mapping.rb42:in ‘to_kernel_device’
After restart the startup stops at GRUB(which doesn’t probably know where to get the starting partition). Just GRUB on a blank screen.
Should I open a bug? For me is not a critical thing but it might be for others when upgrading. Maybe is just for VM upgrades? Please let me know what to do. I can open a bug but not sure how to provide more details as the logs are on the vm which doesn’t start. not sure how to search for those logs. thanks
Not sure what causes it but you may be able to get around it by renaming /etc/default/grub_installdevice to something else and re-creating your grub configuration (using the yast2 bootloader) - make sure you choose to install the bootloader somewhere, like MBR because the checkmark gets cleared.
It seems to be caused because the grub2 default install location gets mangled (to a device that does not exist, perhaps udev has changed?)
Thank you for reply Miuku. I don’t really care about this installation which was just to test the upgrade from 13.1 to 13.2. It was problematic in my case and I would not do it on my real machine until i can get a successful one via the VM. Being a VM I don’t know how I can even attempt to correct it according to your instructions. I was thinking that this might be a bug and to file a defect, but hopefully only on this VM the upgrade misbehaved and others are able to correctly upgrade their systems.
As usual - boot from CD (image) to access installed system.
i have the same problem in my notebook from 13.1 Upgrade to 13.2 with intel ssd 。
Did you get around it by renaming the file and re-creating your Grub configuration or are you still stuck with the issue?

Which upgrade method, offline (boot from dvd, choose upgrade) or online
(zypper dup)?
