Factory Status (openSUSE:11.1 RC1 isos in official tree)

Hi,

We split out openSUSE:11.1 in the build service to generate
the RC1 isos out of the official tree (with correct rpm headers
and the like). Due to this openSUSE:Factory gets less build power
and factory updates will happen less frequently till after 11.1
release.

Just so you know.

Greetings, Stephan

AND

Hi,

I guess you missed them - I have put a new set of live cds
online. Fresh as of 8am CEST this morning.

Greetings, Stephan

from: [opensuse-factory] ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/FactoryLiveCDs](http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-factory/2008-11/msg00827.html)
The above has ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/FactoryLiveCDs in the title; however, I find that empty ATM.

Don’t expect DVD iso’s; it will require an 11.1 Beta update/upgrade, one of those LiveCDs or a net install

I am also having problems with my favorite Dev servers ATM; guess they are loaded or in the process of being updated/sync’d.

Anyway, the bottom line is that when the servers settle down, 11.1 RC1 should be available for us to test.

Hint: look for the date “21 Nov” on the repo folder/rpms prior to executing a “zypper dup” or “zypper up” if you try a new repo.

For you members that are helping with testing, please update/upgrade and get the bug reports in, as the official openSUSE 11.1 RC1 release is Thu, Nov 27 (which doesn’t leave much time for fixes). After RC1, only showstopper bugs will be addressed. Bug reports between now and the 27th are really important. Help make 11.1 the best distro ever;)

So how can I update to the newest thingies from Beta 5? What repos should I insert and what command should I use to do a full update on stuff? (Sorry, but never done this).

In Beta 5, add:
Index of /factory/repo/oss
and
Index of /factory/repo/non-oss
as yast-sources
(untick any others for the update)

open those up and when the dates read 21-Nov-2008, it should be ready.
(or just go ahead & see what happens; won’t hurt anything)

In a terminal as root
“zypper ref”
when that’s done
“zypper up”
when that’s done, reboot

Then you can go back in Yast & add back Packman, etc.

Ta Da:)

openSUSE-11.1-Beta5.2-KDE4-LiveCD-x86_64-Build0007-Media.iso
is up @ ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/FactoryLiveCDs/

Ergo, the update we are looking for is to Beta5.2; I assume they are reserving rc1 until the official release. I’ll go for it when I get back from the ranch this afternoon.

I did a net install of beta 5.2 today. There were way too many dependency issues to do an upgrade
Haven’t really tested anything yet.

Now I have :
OS: Linux 2.6.27.5-3-default x86_64
Current user: jim@linux-wxyz
System: openSUSE 11.1 Beta 5.2 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) “release 58.1”
which was easy enough with zypper ref & zypper up; took a while.

The new kernel broke my manually installed Nvidia 177.80 driver & VirtualBox kernel module.
I wanted to go to the newer Nvidia 177.82 driver in any event & fixing that that was no problem. I have fully functioning desktop effects. Vbox is fixed too.

Now to play with it & see if any of the other 7GB of software I stuffed is broken & all the extra plasmoids are still available. etc. Also, I’ll turn back on my other repos & see if anythings changed @ vlc, Packman, etc.

Have fun:)

I deleted my suse 11.0 partition and added beta 5.2 there because I haven’t used 11.0for some time now and there were too many dependency issues to do an upgrade from beta 11.5
It seems like I have a lot of configuring to do and I have to reinstall my ati driver but I was expecting that

I’m staying on 11.1 beta5 and the 2.6.27.5-2 kernel for now.

One of the alsa dev’s is trying to help fix the headset quirks I have with the new Dell Studio 15 laptop (92HD73C1X5 hardware audio codec) and if I change my configuration precipitously, it could prevent my ability to interact/provide feedback on a consistent configuration, and slow down the ability to sort out the problems.

Just as well Lee, I did a zypper update and mostly it went well with the major things.
However, I am finding a “few” quirks mainly with Yast2:

  • the filter/repo window is only capable of one line of print & that is truncated
  • changing repos in Yast is extremely slow & occasionally freezes the Yast process
  • I used Kaffeine to test video & now every time I boot to 11.1, I get a full screen Kaffeine.
  • Smart doesn’t come with oss & one has to load the repo site to get it.
  • etc., etc.

In hindsight, I should have done a clean install. (For me, things just go better with a clean install.) I’m may leave it until rc1 though & then do a clean install with the DVD. However if I have some free time, I’ll try a clean install with the new 5.2 LiveCD & see.

Got the x86-64 LiveCD from: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/FactoryLiveCDs/

The install gave me a minimal install – the sound didn’t work
went into Yast > repos & turned on the repos (they were there, just ticked them).
Installed my usual patterns & at reboot had my sound back.

I noticed that the bootloader from the LiveCD only gave me 11.1 & windows (none of my 6 other installs) – bootloader worked, it was the menu.lst that didn’t get written correctly. I mounted my other OS root partitions and copied over the pertinent sections and now all is well.

The nit-noids I mentioned in the earlier post all went away, save, Yast is still slow changing repos (maybe I have too many).

Re-affirms my belief in a clean install. Come Thursday & RC1, Ill do another clean install.

I’ve been stuffing S/W for the last couple hours & so far it’s looking great. BTW, many of the repos are moving from factory to 11.1. so check prior to adding your repos from now on.

Have fun:)

I got my ati drive installed and working and everything is working exept, as you say the
repos in yast seem mighty slow. bout two coffee mugs slow.
also networkmanager seems broken, but if up seems to be automatic. it comes up on boot and switched from etho to wlan0 when I unplugged my eth0 line.

all my other problems involve kde4.2 beta that I have installed along with b5.2 and those are minor
having funlol!

I added the repros and did a zyrrer update. After several hours
my wireless dropped and I couldn’t get the connection back, so had
to kill the upgrade and re-boot. Bottom line, system came up, seems ok. Sound in gnome even works (never did) However trying
to run zypper to finish update gives

linux-mfor:/home/don # zypper up
zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.521: cannot open shared object file:
No such file or directory

Any ideas how to correct?

You could run “SuSEconfig” in a terminal as root; that needs to happen after a Yast software action & maybe didn’t get done with the shutdown.

Then try “zypper ref” prior to “zypper up” see if that helps.

Also, in Yast, down at the bottom of the Software page in the middle is (or was) a “Check” dependency button; click it and see if Yast shows missing needed rpms.

Finally, you could try “zypper dup” & go for the whole shebang.

Thanks much for the reply, I’ll try some of those. zypper ref gives
me the same error though.

None of that works. zypper --help gives the same error.

linux-mfor:/home/don # zypper up
zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.521: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Firefox doesn’t run but opera does. Trying software management under yast gives the following error.

	libzypp.so.521 => not found
warning: the gtk frontend is installed but does not work
Error while creating client module sw_single

This is interesting

linux-mfor:/home/don # locate libzypp.so.521
/usr/lib64/libzypp.so.521
/usr/lib64/libzypp.so.521.1.0
linux-mfor:/home/don # ls /usr/lib64/libzypp*
/usr/lib64/libzypp.so.523 /usr/lib64/libzypp.so.523.0.0

Could it be a missing link? Where does “locate” get its info?

renamed libzypp.so.523.0.0 to libzypp.so.521.0.0 and created soft link libzypp.so.521 to it, and zypper was happy.
Ran "zypper ref’ then “zypper up” reinstalled nvidia drivers. Now I have to see what still doesn’t work besides firefox.

I just started a 3.23 gig upgrade with a new kernel start the coffeee
will report on it later

Here’s some important info:

My kernel 2.6.27.5.3 from LiveCD install & one update.

Kernel on the development server today = kernel-default-2.6.27.7-3.1.x86_64.rpm
Kernel-extra on the development server today = kernel-default-extra-2.6.27.7-3.1.x86_64.rpm
Kernel-source on the development server today = kernel-source-2.6.27.7-3.1.x86_64.rpm
kernel-syms on the development server today = kernel-syms-2.6.27.7-1.1.x86_64.rpm

I recommend waiting to do any serious compiling until they all match (or wait until rc1 & get the DVD and do a clean install).

This has been a nightmare for me. I have a laptop that was running 11.0 nicely and decided to upgrade to 11.1 beta5. The only real problem was that I lost the network. Networkmanager did not work properly. I could connect to the network but not the internet. By “connect” I mean I could see the network but could not surf or samba or update software.

In frustration, I re-installed 11.1 beta5 via Live-CD, but while it was working (and connecting to the internet) I forced an update of all packages. That got NetworkManager going again. I made the mistake of changing my hostname from linux123xyz to the real hostname via *yast–>network devices–>host *and that broke Networkmanager again.

I kept the /home directory and let it make a new partition for the os. In fact, I now have an unused partition because I failed to tell it to re-install there. So, both the upgrade and clean install (of sorts) failed me. Actually, I did a complete clean install on a low-spec desktop (my lab rat) and that failed the same way.

There is a problem with networkmanager and wireless but switching to ifup works
you might have to adjust your firewall and how your devices come up auto, on cable connect etc.

ps discussed this on another thread
