extrememly slow forums

maybe just me, but it seems like some parts of the forum are badly out
of whack (sorry for the overly techno-lingo) today…

try this: go to any users profile, say:
http://forums.opensuse.org/members/denverd.html
and click on “Find all posts” and start your stop watch…

so, you say well that blabber mouth has LOTs of post, so try:
http://forums.opensuse.org/members/fireali.html

who has only 4 as of this writing…and it takes 15 seconds to find,
format and display? i’m sure it used to be MUCH faster…much much
faster…

Seems OK

You must have a Virus :-))

LOL

oh NO! i guess i better do a format/install…huh?

but, no kidding: it just took 55 seconds (in firefox) to list your
posts…something is wrong somewhere… but its not in my machine
and not networking inbetween (afaict) because firefox immediately
shows activity at forums.opensuse.org with a progress bar ‘stuck’
about half way…

58 seconds with konqueror showing “…opensuse.org contacted waiting
for reply…”

Opera: 54 seconds showing its M$-ish hour glass

i tell ya’ it is a lot slower than it used to be…

Took less than 5 seconds from here to complete that request.

Tried again 3 seconds
Even better!

Looks like 10.3 is down the toilet :-)))

The Forums is very fast, in my opinion

Search took 0.07 seconds. Page to appear around 4 seconds…

well, maybe the fast results are coming from a search still in the server cache…or maybe there is a networking problem between me and the machine doing the searching…but, it is consistently over 50 seconds here…perhaps it is all in network but i kinda doubt it… because i don’t have the long pause when fetching millions of hits at google (but, i know the opensuse.org searcher is not as strong…and, i know it is much slower here, now, than it was a week ago)…

perhaps it is all in the networking, but i doubt it:

oh wow! i can edit! @Vixtor: yes the forums are fast, i’m actually talking about a very slow search function within the forum server…my bad selection of subject…

Check your firefox addons, plugins or tweak your fox.

Takes forever here as well. Both in Firefox 3.6.6 and Rekonq 0.5.0 on openSuSE 11.2 with KDE 4.4.5. (Epiphany in Xfce is no better.) It says “Search took 0.08 seconds” but it takes about half a minute from click till display.

Hey DenverD,

>perhaps it is all in the networking, but i doubt it

Really…we didn’t sniff for packets coming from your IP address and
reroute them through Katmandu…but I like a good conspiracy theory
just as much as the next guy. You’re giving me some good ideas
here…

Kim - 7/9/2010 2:57:44 PM

I see the same here → there is no conspiracy against DenverD alone. Clicking on a thread takes around 20 seconds to display 10 posts. Data throughput on the line peaks at 80 KB/s while the download bar is slowly progressing. I wanted to know if my side is broken and rsynced the update repo. Now downstream peaked at 2200 KB/s. Something is very odd :sarcastic:

When only a few people see the issue and a lot don’t, I have to suspect
the cause to be in the network outside our firewall.

Kim - 7/12/2010 10:46:51 AM

It seems OK now. Searching for and displaying people’s posts from their profile takes less than 2 seconds. Unlike a few days ago.

Well no.

It only is OK when I am logged-in. When I am not, searches still take about half a minute. Additionally, logging-in now takes that long as well.

(Apologies for the two posts in a row. I missed the deadline for edits.)

Would moving country help? lol!

lol! Depends on whether he needs to move the molehill or the mountain.

HA! that is the key…also, if i am logged into the (http) forum the
search “Find all posts” (from any user profile page) is fast as
ever…BUT, if not signed it it routinely takes about 50 to 55
seconds, every time…every browser…and now multiple users using
different routes (and, remember a traceroute at the SAME time as a
search show NO outside your firewall network problem…

i guess the problem is inside your firewall…somewhere in sign-in vs
not-signed-in logic

just log out and check it out for yourself…

Just did. No perceptable change in speed here.
