External USB Seems dead?

My Son just handed me his Verbatim 1TB external USB HD
Doesn’t show in fdisk or Gparted and obviously no access in file manager.
No seen by windows either, except the USB part

Here is the info from a konsole:

Any ideas where to start?

Can you hear it spin up when you apply power? If desperate you could open it up and extract the HD to connect via SATA. But some external HDs have the USB interface built onto the drive, but more commonly the 2.5" ones.

Yes it spins up
I’ll have to get back to this later or tomorrow now

Thanks for the ideas KY

i’d first suspect a cable and/or connector failure…but, before i did
any surgery i’d hop to the Verbatim site and see what kind of diagnostic
utilities they offer…and, nose around their fora some…

oh, how old is this drive and is it still in warranty? the answers to
that could hint it might be best to minimize spin ups until you know
more about what’s what…

[of course, knowing you trained him right, he has a full copy somewhere
else…so . . .]

He’s my Son, they don’t listen! Copy, No.

He let a friend use it, it came back like this.
2 or so yrs old IIRC, no warranty.

I’ll look in to your recommendations, thanks.

I have just take a look at the drive more carefully, with a view to opening the case and extracting the HD and I notice the tamper seal is already broken. My Sons ‘Friend’ needs a good slapping if you ask me.

I’ll investigate further later today. I have the dentist this morning :X

Pulled the HD from the enclosure, it’s standard 3.5" internal sata WD 1TB
Connected it to a Linux Box…zilch :frowning:

So I just out of curiosity, plopped a old 160GB sata HD back in the enclosure. Works!

Fortunately it seems, another friend has a copy of the contents of the duff 1TB HD

He might have opened it for inspection, see how beautiful it is inside. :-p
Or rather :frowning:

Or perhaps the disk did not work, and he tried to “repair” it. Who knows…

Good luck!
