Sorry, if that question throws people off; trying to figure out if it’s possible to install and link software such as Urban Terror to my SSD (Acer Aspire One ZG5). To put it lightly and simply I like the SSD despite what people post as draw backs it’s a much faster rig then people give it credit for. Is there a way I could use my external USB HD to install games on the external and play them off of it? Or, does that require completely wiping out the USB HD and installing SuSe to it; just to utilize the storage in playing games? I apologize for this random act of aspieness lol (Aspergers).
So what kind of games are we talking about? How large is your SSD? Where is your /home mounted? I use a 120 GB SSD and put all of root / on it. But, I use a separate hard drive for /home and all of my media files. So using this method does load all applications on the SSD, but all data is on a separate hard drive. I have not had an issue with this setup, but one must keep root / at 60 GB at least in my opinion.
Thank You,

a) Install as usual on your HD.
b) Mount your SSD on a fixed place (not /media, but /mnt).
c) Find where your program was actually installed to; an “rpm -ql
package” will tell you.
d) If the program was installed to its own directory, copy that entire
directory over to somewhere in the ssd, remove the copy on the HD, and
create a symlink.
e) If it doesn’t go to its own directory, but as individual files here
and there, do the same for each file.

8 GB SSD I wanted to install Urban Terror and other games such as Nexuiz to the external USB HD which is 80 GB. Is it possible to alter the setup after the install or do I need to re-install the OS?
So with an 8 GB SSD, you would think you can NOT put a lot more than /boot there, certainly 8 GB for all of root / will mean keeping a very stark install. A look at my setup where I compile kernels all of the time sees /boot as 1.7 GB while my entire root / is 20.3 GB right now. I don’t know what formula allows too much located on a 8 GB SSD.
Thank You,
Shouldn’t that be “80 GB” SSD?
Thanks for the advice just wish I didn’t have to re-install the system; as it is my USB external HD has the DVD installation medium on it.
So, it basically comes down to running gparted, keeping the installation medium, installing portions to the SSD and portions to the external USB HD. The Acer Aspire One ZG5 only shipped out with an 8GB SSD for 2008. I love the speed of it; and, to a smaller extent the size.
OK, I get it. Does it have a card reader? A customer has a 32GB one as an extension of his 30GB SSD. Mind, AFAIK UrbanTerror stores dowloaded maps in your homedir.
I might add that if you go for a single desktop install, load only the minimum and keep your /home on the external hard drive, you might be able to make it with a few large apps. I might look at using XFCE in such a case as well. When root runs out though, you can be dead in the water. You would want a working LiveCD you could use to blank out tmp files for sure if needed.
Thank You,

As I wrote, you can store only the game in the SSD.

I forgot I had the USB HDD so I installed it from another USB stick to the external HDD and kept Android x86 on the SSD which is where it feels more at home; and on the external it flies and boots much faster then it usually does without being hampered by size constraints.
