Hi all,
I will greatly appreciate your help in the following problem in my computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 in x86_64 bit mode and KDE 4.5.
I can play a CD which has music files as .CDA files, if I put it in the internally mounted CD/DVD player. I can see the contents of the CD with Dolphin (or Konquror) and play it using Kaffeine.
However, as soon as put the same CD in an external DVD/CD player, I cannot see it with Dolphin (or Konqueror). Nor can I play it Kaffeine (although, strangely, I can play it with VLC player). My system just cannot mount that CD, it remains invisible to the system (excepting for the VLC player or the K3b). For CD with mp3 files or DATA files there is no problem at all.
How can I play and see CDROM with files in CDA format through an external USB DVD/CD player in the same way as I can see it when put in the internal DVD/CD player?
You posted in the subforum “How to use these Forums”.
As we are trying to be as clear as possible to encourage people to post in those (sub)forums where they have the best change of getting help, could you please tell us why you decided to post here and not in the Hardware or even Multi-Media forum?
This to help us to make our site better and better.
I am very sorry for the mistake. I was puzzled because it was not clear to me how to post a new message/question and was looking for the way. In that situation I forgot about this the correct way to post a message.
From now onward I will follow your very goos advice. Would it be O.K., if I make a new post in the way you suggested?

It could be the USB DVD/CD player is defective. Just replaced a DVDR and
a CDRW because both were defective. The DVDR with a USB DVDRW.
Do not start a new thread in the correct forum unless you got stuck here after a few days. In any case a few people are allready answering you and making two threads about the same will create a little mess I am afraid.
Heart felt thanks for your advice. I checked my DVD/CD player as per your suggestion. The drive seems to be fine. I placed a DVD and it worked. Then I put a CD with music in mp3 format. It worked. It is only when I put a CD with music in CDDA or CDA format that the problem begins – those CDs are not recognized by Dolphin, Mozilla Firefox, Konqueror, Kaffeine, Xine. However, if the same CDA and CDDA CDs are placed in the internal CD/DVD drive, then there is no problem. The problem is only when the CDA or CDDA CDs are in the USB external drive. The fact that the external USB CD/DVD drive is not at fault is further verified by the fact that the VLC player can mount and and play the CDDA & CDA files in that external drive. It is strange that neither DOLPHIN nor Konqueror nor Firefox can see even the content of those types of CD.
It seems that SUSE 11.2 does not properly mount those CD medium which have music files in in CDA or CDDA format. What do you think?
If I’m on the right track, you may find having more than one dvd/cdrom device means having only one assigned with the device node that some of these handlers expect to use. So, you may have to adjust the relevant udev rules as per this thread. In particular, this recent ‘tow to’ thread:
Also, I followed your advice and visited the place that you suggested. My problem is that the the extrenally mounted optical drive is not recognized by either Kaffeine, or xine or mplayer or Dolphine only if I put a optical disk in CDDA or CDA format. For all other types optical disks like with avi or mp3 or data there is never any problem. For your information, I have sent the following message to jdmcdaniel also. I am hoping that I will hear from you both.
Kind regards. Sheo
"Hi Jdmcdaniel,
I have seen your quoted very valuable post. Now knowing your depth of knowledge, I want ask you a related question.
I have two CD/DVD+RW drive, one is internally mounted and the other one is externally attached through USB. If I put a CDA or a CDDA compact disk in the external drive neither kaffeine nor mplayer nor xine nor the Dolphin recognize or read these two types of disks. There is no problem with disks written in mp3 or avi or just text data. Strangely, there is absolutely no problem when the same CDDA/CDA disk when they are put in the internally mounted optical dive.
I have spent days on the SUSE or other forums but no solution as yet. Do you have any advice for me?
which will be your internal drive. BTW, other audio/video apps are more configurable, and so can work with multiple optical devices regardless of device name.
Now, Jdmcdaniel’s suggestion is to edit the relevant udev rule(s), so that your (preferred) external optical drive will inherit this device name every time, allowing you to play audio CDs with your favorite application. I suggest you follow that thread (that I linked to) now in order to avoid any confusion.
