I formatted my External HD w/ ext3, using gparted. It wont let me write to the drive says I am not the owner. I am unable to change this.

I normally create a directory on the external drive and change
ownership, eg;
sudo mkdir /media/<mount_point>/username
sudo chown username:users /media/<mount_point>/username
Then you can create subdirectories etc under the username (or whatever
you called it).
