I’m running 11.2, and my external USB hard drive (NTFS) is always powered down after a reboot. I have to pull the power cable and re-insert it, it then turns on and is mounted. I’ve never had this happen with other versions/distros. Is there a way to make 11.2 (KDE) power on and mount the drive on startup? Thanks.

Does a module load when you do this? Is there anything logged in dmesg?
Just got back from a work call, so back to looking at this.
I just did a reboot, and the device is powered on until the KDE desktop loads, then it powers off. dmesg has several errors:

i have a faint memory of a discussion about something like this in
these fora before [you might try using the forum’s advanced search
engine <http://forums.opensuse.org/search.php>]…as i recall the
Windows[tm] driver for some external hard drive enclosures sends a
safe to power down signal to the drive enclosure (because just turning
off the power on some (all?) windows file system makes it go
crazy!)…maybe your external NTFS is screaming “I’m broke, turn off
the power!”
or, perhaps your particular USB enclosure is manufactured by a maker
who assumes everyone on earth should use Redmond software and
therefore the Vista driver sends a turn the USB power on signal…
the box that your external came in, did it have a flying windows, and
“Vista Ready” or something like that on it? how about an Apple/Mac
symbol? a penguin and “Linux Compatible” maybe?
i think you are gonna have to figure out how to ‘properly’ power down
that drive, or it will never power up ‘properly’.
but, i could be wrong as i know next to nothing about Redmond software.

can’t remember what the box had, but I’m guessing it did have some sort of “Windows Ready” garbage on it. The strange thing is I loaded a live CD of another distro, and the drive stayed powered up fine. I then rebooted back into 11.2 and it stayed powered up again. Going to do a bit more testing, including moving it to my XP work laptop and doing a proper ‘remove’ and see what happens.

let us know what you find (for the next guy/gal who uses search and
finds your excellent subject line)

it was a fluke that it worked once, still staying powered down. I did connect it to a WinXP laptop and do a correct removal/power down, but didn’t fix the issue. I’m going to try on another system running running Arch with KDE and see what happens, and since this is a new install I may just do a quick re-install and see what happens there. It seems like a module isn’t loading, but I’m not sure how to fix that in 11.2/KDE.
okay, I’ve done quite a bit of testing, and this seems to me to be a bug in KDE and Opensuse 11.2
I just did a fresh install, I’ve tried both 32-bit & 64-bit. Problem still persists. After logging into KDE my Wester Digital USB hard drive is not showing up, it’s actually powered down.
Steps I’ve tried to verify the problem:
- use a live CD on this system to see if that works - it does work using the Fedora 12 live KDE CD.
- try a different PC. I installed Fedora 12 KDE on an old PC, and it works fine there. I’ve rebooted at least 5 times, and also did a couple of power downs and then started up, the drive shows up every time.
- re-installed Opensuse 11.2 32-bit, no luck, same problem.
- installed Opensuse 11.2 64-bit, no luck, same problem.
- Tried different cables & ports, no luck, same problem.
Anyone else experiencing anything like this?
