Ext4 or Btrfs or XFS for VMs?

New build with 4 extra HDs that will be used for VMs,

  • First, need to know which format is best; Ext4, Btrfs or XFS?
  • Second, should I encrypt the HDs?

Thanks!..

That is entirely your choice.

Your question is actually ambiguous. You could be asking what file system to use on the VM hosting system. Or you could be asking which to use within a particular VM.

Here, I am using “ext4” for the hosting file system where the VMs are stored. But then that’s not my root file system. Within the VMs themselves, it depends on what I am trying to test.

Yea, after reading my post, it was not very clear. Leap is installed with its default of Btrfs for the Host, and I have four HDs in addition where I want store all my VMs. I wanted to know which one is the best file system to format these HDs, that will give me the best performance and benefit. I just went with XFS for now.

That seems a reasonable choice.
