I also did “the right thing” and registered my usage with Vivaldi Technologies™ because, when and if I change from Mozilla Firefox to Vivaldi, the “right thing” is to support them with yearly donations …
The only slightly annoying thing is, the e-Mail traffic – within the last 2 weeks, 10 e-Mails …
Since it’s explicitly a newsletter, I guess you can simply unsubscribe from it. The mail header might even contain an “unsubscribe” URL or mail address.
I was a very happy Opera user for a long time until the matching multimedia codecs became such a problem that I gave up. Pity.
Daily newspapers are currently suffering – because of the lack of advertising income to support the production costs. They’re reducing their staffing costs – the journalists – and therefore there isn’t as much independent, researched, journalism. Which is impacting democracy.
The advertising expenditure is still around but, it’s being paid elsewhere –
One of the recipients of advertising expenditure is, Internet Search Engines.
And, guess who’s funding the developers at the Mozillla Foundation.
Catch 22: Vivaldi uses “StartPage” as the default Search Engine – which I initially thought was OK – Vivaldi is “open” and, not “big business” – relies on donations for financing …
Everything fine and dandy until, I looked who “StartPage” is –
A company headquartered in the Netherlands;
With a parent company – “System1” – an Internet advertising company based in Marina del Rey, California.
Oh dear – still caught in the “advertising on the Internet” syndrome.
So yes, if I move to Vivaldi rather than Firefox, at least the browser development will no longer be funded by Internet advertising but, the Search Engine development will still be funded by Internet advertising.
Which doesn’t really address the issue with local newspapers and open journalism not receiving enough advertising funds to support their efforts …
Stefan, yes, yes, I noticed the checkbox to stop the e-Mail traffic but, being a somewhat suspicious person, I wanted to check the behaviour of the people who’re developing an Internet Browser which may, possibly, become my default browser …
And one more thing – Vivaldi point out that, you can move the Tabs to the left side for a vertical view.
I searched and discovered that, other browsers can also do this – also Mozilla Firefox …
For the case of the Vivaldi browser, there is no restriction on “only the left side” – you can place the browser Tabs wherever – left; bottom; right or, the default top …
Which is now my current Mozilla Firefox tabs placement → left → vertical …
I used Vivaldi for about one year. At that time, it could be installed from “packman”. But I did not use it exclusively. I also continued to use “firefox”.
I did like “vivaldi”. But I think I prefer “firefox” as my regular browser.
As for journalism – yes, there’s a problem there. I’m currently using NPR and The Guardian, which I read online. And I support both with donations. I also go to Google News, and read some articles there, though I sometimes hit paywalls.
But you can easily change the preferred search engine to one of the usual European ones, at least for text searching (alas for images only bing or Google are available?)
( Sidenote: There was a time when I was deeply involved (just for myself) in testing various browsers. I was testing Opera and involved in forums when we uncovered something unique - that’s when I dropped Opera for my use and switched to testing Vivaldi ).
So, slightly interesting history about Vivaldi.
A while back, Opera was bought by a Chinese company. Opera co-founder (in 1995) Jon von Tetzchne (who left the company in 2011) created Vivaldi company in 2013. The Vivaldi browser was released in 2015. Many former Opera devs joined Vivaldi. So, obviously Vivaldi has some deep roots from Opera
I’ve been using vivaldi exclusively for a year or two and have no complaints. I moved from brave browser because they got involved in cryptocurrency for their finances. I have had some sites restrict me while running vivaldi because they can detect when trackers, etc are blocked. I just move to another site. You can restrict those protections on a site as you wish to get admission.
There have been a few tech issues I have observed sporadically but I find the vivaldi forum to be responsive, interested, and very helpful. Any glitches seem to be rapidly addressed…

Completely true. I guess not too many persons realize this and that makes it even more damaging.
One reason of them suffering are the social media. That is even worse with the algorithms tuned to maximize the time you spend on the platform and to trigger user engagement favoring contentious content and trigger echo chambers. Also, nobody reads a longer document on Social media and not everything is fit for just a soundbite.
Advertising has been getting worse and worse. Being tech-savvy it is not too difficult for me see any advertisements on the Internet but I wondering what will have if the AI honeymoon phase is over and companies have to "generate"money.
I took about five paid subscriptions to different media to offset the advertisements I do not see.
