I was using Thunderbird for email. Now using gnome desktop on opensuse 11.
Can someone please explain what the difference/ advantages between evolution and thunderbird are?
I only use email for home use.

So why not use Thunderbird under Gnome?
I am but I thought evolution would work better with the calendar that comes with gnome.
You can get Lightning, a calendar add-on for Thunderbird. You can even get another add-on to connect it up to Google calendar.
I need the calendar app for reminders so I guess it needs to be running all the time.
