Evolution: Select contacts from address book

I just upgraded from openSUSE 11.4 to 12.1, which caused Evolution to upgrade from 2.3 to 3.2. On trying to send a message to several recipients I no longer get a list of all my contacts from which I can select individual contacts, but have to enter the first letters of a name, which lets me see only those contacts corresponding to the search string. Have I missed a configuration option somewhere or is this really the only way to do this, i.e. having to know beforehand which recipients I wish to send to and then calling them up individually instead of scanning a list and choosing them? Seems like a retrograde step to me.

I don’t know whether it’s relevant, but on upgrading I switched from Gnome 2 to xfce - I can’t work with Gnome 3.

I would be grateful for any help on this.
