Does anyone else have this issue? For me it’s as follows:
every 2-3 months I need to delete ~/.evolution and ~/.gconf/apps/evolution and start over
Many times, sometimes 2-3 times a day but usually 1 I need to force exit evolution because it becomes not responsive. Then I need to do a ps aux | grep evolution and kill -9 the pids listed there (if I don’t evolution will load but not communicate with exchange server or give a message “lost connection to backend process”)
Part of the symptoms are trying to open a message and getting a blank window. Evolution is not “Crashed” and in the main window it shows status messages e.g. “Retrieving message 0000000197a7f” which will stay there forever, until forcefully shutdown evolution.
Setting the option “sync messages locally” does help a little, but it does not solve 1) (actually it seems to make it worse) and also the initial connection is VERY slow, even if few messages were received since the last load/sync
Novell/SUSE seem to care nothing about evolution-exchange e.g. bug # 445668 opened 2008-Nov and not a single response.
Does anyone have a solution, besides switching back to Windows and using Outlook? Email/Calendar/Contacts is really killer and if I have to keep on dealing with this crap, I really might have to switch back. I don’t understand how Novell can tout SLED for enterprise unless these basic things are working.
I am running SUSE11.1/KDE 4.1.3 and am also having an issue with Evolution version 2.24.1.1 with Server Type Microsoft Exchange using outlook Web Access URL.
I currently have all installed plugins enabled.
Evolution connects and works well for a portion of the day. Mail sending/receiving as well as calendar updates and GAL updates to our corporate directory.
I’m connected to our corporate network from a remote site via VPNC using the Cisco client.
During the day Evolution will hang and I’m forced to kill & restart the application more than once per day.
During that time my other applications such as remote desktop are working brilliantly accross the VPNC tunnel.
I have roughly 18 folders and associated filters that work.
The only odd rule in my messages is a ClamAVvirii rule for Evolution:
Pipe to Program evo_clamav.sh returns 1
Action: Move to Folder Virii
I will collect additional data the next time the system crashes but is this configuration a known issue?
Evolution looked so promising when I tried it years ago as a Mandrake (now Mandriva) user. Then I moved over the Opensuse and thought I’d bring Evolution with me. But with each successive release, Evolution became more and more unusable. I finally dumped it. I just use Thunderbird now. It’s not as pretty, but it does what I need.
It’s a shame, because Evolution is a good-looking mail client. I hope they eventually get it sorted.
But to answer your question, I was indeed getting that and other glitches. That’s why I stopped using it.
Before I also used it in my company, and also sometimes experienced problems where I had to kill it and delete files in ~/.evolution.
Fortunately later I discovered that our mail server also has IMAP access, so I switched to that. You might try to convince your system admin to enable IMAP…

Evolution is NOT my favorite app, Exchange or no exchange. It’s very
buggy and likely will always be very buggy (I have my QA hat on).
Also, this isn’t really a SLED forum. With that said, Evolution is a
mixed bag when it comes to versioning. Sometimes newer version help,
sometimes they hurt.
Right now I use Evolution under openSUSE 11.0 using the OWA connector.
For me, it’s VERY stable… sure, you still have to restart evolution,
but that’s NORMAL… again, evolution is NOT my favorite app. It’s
buggy no matter what. Mine stays up for weeks though.
Under KDE divorcing Evolution from the irritating Gnome key ring manager
is painful… but VERY necessary for stability. I can’t remember the
exact steps… it’s NOT straight forward.
There ARE alternatives. There’s OWA itself (web browser interface to
Exchange). There’s Outlook under wine and there’s always the virtual
machine route. Also, as other have said, there’s IMAP and even POP
(depending on version of Exchange) available, the Exchange admin has to
enable those things.
