I am running Evolution with 11.1 on Gnome.
There are two problems with Evolution.
First, whenever I download emails, the server is not cleared (I use Virgin). I know this, because I accessed my account via a different PC and it downloaded all the emails I had already downloaded via Evolution!!! Any idea of how I can fix that?
Secondly, Evolution doesn’t automatically search for emails upon opening. Why not?
Checked this forum for fixes without success.
Check the receiving options for that account. Check or uncheck “Leave Messages on Server.” You can’t do this with an IMAP account.

Is it set to download messages automatically at regular intervals?
Well done Chief, you were right on both counts! Messages no longer saved on server, but how can I make Evolution automatically look for mail when opened, rather than having to be prompted? Current setting is to look for new mail every 10 minutes, which suits me fine. It is just that in 10.1, you opened Evolution and it checked mail for you, which would be useful to have again!
If I have it set to check for new messages every x minutes, it also checks when opening Evolution email. What version do you have, I have 2.24.4.
Version 2.24.1.1
It came as part of the 11.1 download.
Try adding the Gnome stable repo and updating evolution through that.
I would love to, but haven’t a clue how to do it. Could you talk me through it on the forum?
Open a terminal and enter (as root):
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/2.24/openSUSE_11.1/ Gnome:Stable
zypper ref -r Gnome:Stable
zypper up -r Gnome:Stable -t package evolution
I do that and get a lot of text and then the following question:
Do you want to reject the key, trust temporarily, or trust always? [R/t/a/?]:
I assume my answer is a, but if I key in just a it tells me the answer is “invalid”
What have I done wrong
Since you’re quite new to this, do this via Yast - Software - Software Management. In there, click Configuration - Repositories. You will enter the repo-manager. If mentioned repo is not there yet, add it by clicking Add - leave ‘Enter URL’ option checked, paste URL below in URL-line, Next, Next, OK. Question about the key, answer Yes, import the key. Back in the software installer, search for ‘evolution’, tick the package to upgrade it, Accept, done.
In Software Management, I cannot see Configuration.
However, under Software, there is a Software Repositaries option. Is it this?
Try this:
- Open the Software Repository manager first
- Click “add”, and select “Specify URL”
- Paste the URL above, and name it “Gnome:Stable”
- Once you have added it, refresh it
- Close the repository manager
- Open the software manager
- In groups, select “Repositories”
- Select “Gnome:Stable” in the repository list
- Search for Evolution
- Upgrade Evolution
- Click “Apply”
You should now have Evolution 2.24.4 installed.
You will need to import the key.
Once I paste the url, I get the following message:
Unable to create repository
from URL ‘zypper ar Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/2.24/openSUSE_11.1 Gnome:Stable
zypper ref -r Gnome:Stable
zypper up -r Gnome:Stable -t package evolution’.
Invalid Url scheme ‘zypper ar http’

I’m sorry, I should have specified that the Repository Manager and Software Manager are in Yast. “zypper” is not part of the URL; when prompted for this, enter
Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/2.24/openSUSE_11.1
Follow these steps after opening Yast:
- Open the Software Repository manager
- Click “add”, and select “Specify URL”
- Paste the URL above, and name it “Gnome:Stable”
- Import the key when prompted
- Once you have added it, refresh it
- Close the repository manager
- Open the software manager
- In groups, select “Repositories”
- Select “Gnome:Stable” in the repository list
- Search for Evolution
- Upgrade Evolution
- Click “Apply”
Ha Ha you are going to think I am an idiot. Not 100% really understanding what I am doing, I am having to do what you suggest LITERALLY. This means I will do something stupid, which for you is obvious. So, sorry!
But literally cutting and pasting the blue link you highlighted again gives an error message:Unable to create repository
from URL 'Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/2.24/openSUSE_11.1 '.
Url scheme is a required component

I am clearly not putting in something that will strike you as obvious!
Would this have been the correct code?
Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/2.24/openSUSE_11.1 Gnome:Stable
Ignore the last posting. Figured that the http bit gets missed off when posting here, so went back to original link and that worked fine. Am now stuck in Software manager. I have found Gnome:Stable, although there are two of them, one after then other. But when you ask me to search for Evolution. Where? On the right hand side there are lots of Evolution bits listed. Which is the relevant bit?
No, you are certainly not an idiot. I work at a college with students who have little computer experience beyond email and word processing, and I should know better than to make assumptions like this. We all learn at some point.

Links in this forum are displayed by the title. You will have to copy the target link. Are you using Firefox? A right-click on the link will show an option to “Copy Link Location.” This is the information that you need.
Do I select everything on the right hand side that starts with “Evolution” and then apply? That would seem logical. But I aint doing it without your say so!
