I just installed openSUSE LEAP on a new Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th gen (and upgraded to kernel 4.6). Everything is very tiny. The fonts, the taskbar and icons, the window titlebar, etc. How can I make all of this bigger without ruining the resolution? (i.e., I don’t want to set a lower resolution in “Configure Desktop->Display”)
Did you try changing the DPI setting? No need to change resolution.
On KDE4 it’s in system-settings>Appearance>Fonts. In LEAP it’s probably system-settings5 or similar. don’t know about Gnome or XFCE.
That changes fonts but not everything else being small
We need to know which Graphical Environment (YaST Control Center - Software Management - View: “Patterns”) you are using:
- Plasma 5 (KDE); GNOME; XFCE; LXDE; Enlightment; MATE?
Additional information such as an indication as to whether or not the default patterns from the “Fonts” and “X Window System” sections have been installed, would also be useful.
[HR][/HR]There are two places where the system settings with respect to fonts and icons can be influenced:
- In YaST: System -> Fonts: on the first tab, the “Font Antialiasing” and “Force Autohinting On” and “Force Hint Style” settings need to be inspected and most probably used; as well as the “Preferred Families” in the second tab.
- In the “System Settings” of the Graphical Environment.
For example, assuming KDE Plasma 5, “System Settings” -> “Font” and “Icons”:
On my Leap 42.1 system, the “Fonts” section has a “Default” button: first try the default settings and then, if the current Leap 42.1 “default” is not suitable for High Resolution displays, first globally adjust the font size via the “Adjust All Fonts…” button, and then fine-tune the sizes individually if needed.
Same for the “Icons” section – first the defaults in the “Theme” Tab and then in the “Advanced” Tab increase the Icon sizes:
“Desktop”, “Panel” and “Dialogues” can use Icons of size up to ‘256’; the other selections can use Icons up to size ‘48’.
[HR][/HR]If all this is not sufficient for the concerned High Resolution display, then a Bug Report needs to be raised to address this issue.
I have a relative who in he past asked me to provide the exact same thing (although in Windows)… Increase the size of “everything” including text size and icons but without decreasing the screen resolution. He couldn’t really tell me why he wanted this, the only thing I can think of that makes a difference is how videos are displayed when higher resolution can make a clear difference but he didn’t watch videos.
I guess I’d ask you the question for an answer I didn’t get before…
Because the alternative which is to modify the individual objects displayed in the Desktop has consequences… You will find that if the windows and the window chrome(The strip that typically runs across the top and sometimes around the window) won’t be sized to the text, so you will have text that “spills over” outside the normal space. You will have icons which might not appear as designed. Windows and other objects might not fit or be located on the screen correctly.
In other words, be prepared for display anomalies because some things will display not according to how they were designed.
It’s far better to just adjust the display resolution.
