eth0 state toggles

Hi All,
My eth0 device state is toggling. And therefore i am not able to go online. Let me explain in detail. I have a netgear router that is hard-wired via port 1 to my desktop. So that means that the indicator “1” should be lit on my netgear. However, it doesn’t stay that way. When the light is lit, I am able to browse the net as I am able to do so now. But when it is not, then ofcourse, there is no net.

Also if the computer is restarted and the netgear has supplied an ip address, then the eth0 is up, otherwise it is not even listed under lspci or in ifconfig.

I suspect it is some program that is disabling my eth0. Earlier i had read in some forums and disabled ipv6 support for eth0 and restarted the computer. It worked fine then… It also seems to be working fine now. But dont know for how long…

It is no clear for me what is your main concern/problem here :-?

If the router’s ethernet port light is “off” that seems to indicate a
hardware problem (cable, ethernet card, bad port…) because even a bad
configuration on the computer’s network should “lit” the light.

I think the light just indicates the “link” is established, whatever the
setup is o.k or wrong… or at least so it is in all old routers and
switches I have tested
