Errors installing Multimedia essentials

I’m a user not an expert. I have been using linux since around suse 7.2. I’m working through the issues I have a with new installation of opensuse 11.1 with KDE 4.1.3. I’ve resolved several but I’m having an issue with the multimedia tools. I’m using the guide for 11.1 as per Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Basic system detail
Asus P5KSE motherboard, NVidia 8600GT, 2GB RAM, Viewsonic VX2235 - system about 13 months old.
Kernel 2.6.27.7-pae
KDE 4.1.3
Dual boot with Windows Vista Business (sadly needed for one application that doesn’t run under wine)

Sound is working although I get phonon “failed, using default” errors when KDE is started.

xine-ui and xvidcore both give this error

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. It seems to be quite a chore to get KDE 4.1.3 configured. Still it’s all new and interesting

to the above choose this:

] replacement of libcaca-0.99.beta13b-2.80.i586 with libcaca0-0.99.beta16-0.pm.3.i586

Also might be worth:
Go to software management
filter by repo
and do update all unconditionally in Packman

I never had this error with Phonon, though I have seen complaints about it.

to the above choose this:

] replacement of libcaca-0.99.beta13b-2.80.i586 with libcaca0-0.99.beta16-0.pm.3.i586

Cheers. Both installed now

I go through all this stuff every I do a new installation. I just don’t get enough practice because I almost never have to do it twice.

I’ll see how phonon goes. I only installed this yesterday. I suppose I don’t need everything fixed in 24 hours.

The graphics have radically improved so I’m really happy about that. I had terrible graphics with opensuse 11.0 - blur, ghosting, stack of cards effect moving a window and I was never able to resolve those. This is so much better.

I thought it might be too good to be true. I can play my mp3 collection from my hard drive, but I can’t play an audio CD.

Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘cdda:///dev/sr0’. Check the log for details.

Which log do I need to check.

The system isn’t seeing the audio CDs at all. Nothing happens. Data CD/DVDs work.

K3b can’t see the device either. K3b error follows. There was another error about the k3b codecs. I’ve installed them.

I don’t know what to do with this error though.

No CD/DVD writer found.
K3b did not find an optical writing device in your system. Thus, you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. However, you can still use other K3b features like audio track extraction or audio transcoding or ISO9660 image creation.

Any help with this one :’(

do this

YAST >> Security and Users >> User Management >> “select your user” >> Edit >> Details >> Groups >> check “cdrom” and “disk” and then click on “ACCEPT”.

you may need to reboot

Cheers caf4926

That fixed K3b - happy lady  I rebooted but I still can’t open an audio CD. The CD I’m using works on VLC in Vista and worked on opensuse 11.0 so it’s “known good”. Am I missing something obvious?

I don’t recall having this sort of trouble since setting up modems and printers way back :frowning:

Is k3b able to read and rip it?

I didn’t have time to try that last night. I’ll do when I get home from work later on today. Time zones aren’t helpful for Aussies. I’ll post what happens.

Thanks for your help.

K3b can successfully burn a data CD. I didn’t try a DVD because I would have to burn another distro .iso. K3b sees a DVDRW.

It still doesn’t see the audio CDs. These are CDs that 11.0 played with no problems. I must still be missing something in the multimedia area :frowning:

K3b can rip the CD in .ogg but not mp3.

Make sure you have

k3b-codecs
w32codecs

When I went back through Red Dwarf’s checklist the gstreamer packages weren’t installed. So I installed them.

Still doesn’t play an audio CD :frowning:

I ended up removing all the pulse entries listed in YAST after finding them mentioned several times as an issue. I now have a full range of system sounds which I didn’t before. System sounds seem to be playing on my external speakers with some volume control which I also didn’t have.

I still can’t play an audio CD or have an audio CD recognised.
