error while installing packman rpms

hello,

while trying to install gimp and mplayer from packman rpm, a conflict resolution warning appears saying: “nothigg provides libpoppler-glib.so.1 need by gimp…” a similar error appears while trying to install mplayer also.

Any clue to get around it?

Unless you are running opensuse 10.3, that dependency error sounds like a
package build error, linking to an old library. Better contact the
packager.

You might check to see if adding any of the other repos makes it suddenly available. Also check what version of gimp you’re actually installing… it might not be the one you think.

ive installed another version of gimp so i can work with it.
But this in general is quite frustrating for a newbie like me, who is still comparing windows with linux and wants a gui like xp?

Infact half of things i want to install from yast> s/w management > turn out to have this irritating thing "nothing provides xyzlib… needed by xyz-d-d-d-.i586 ?

How do u guyz on forum work around to get wmv, browser plugins, etc etc to work with all this??

Yes, it is pretty annoying

Dependency issues can arise for several things:

  • You don’t have the right repos enabled
  • A packager/packaging failure (which links to an old library)
  • A normal dependency problem when compiling program which need another
packages to be present before installing

For starters, better keep installing packages which are included in the
distribution.

If you need install whatever rpm from another site, just be patience and
resolve any dependency error before. “Patience is a virtue”

One way is to use the webpin section on the OpenSuSE site, just search for
the missing dep and if it is in any of the repo`s then it will tell you and
ask if you want to enable the repo and install.

This can lead to having an adverse effect sometimes as you can end up with a
big load of spaghetti in you repo config but that can be manually pruned
down afterwards.

Also there is a YaST addon that will put a search function icon in the
software section that does the same thing without you having to go to the
website, let me see if I can find the name of the add-on.

Clickety… clacety…

webpin-package-search-yast - Desktop file to reach webpin with yast

Just use Yast>software>software management and search for yast if the webpin
addon is there then install that, I cannot remember when I installed it so
am not sure if it is in the main repos, you might have to use the webpin
search on the website to find the webpin addon ( If you see what I mean )
