"error while creating client module online_update" ???

Hello.

When I click on the orange warning suggesting me an update, YAST tells me there is an update, asks if I want to install it, asks for my password, and the warning goes to green. So far, so good…

… but about 10 seconds later, the warning goes orange again asking me if I want to apply the very same update (I typed my password right, I know that because I tried three times and used it also to get root access as well)

Now, it I call YAST directly, enter password, Software => Online update, I get a window with just the message :

“Error while creating client module online_update”

Does anybody know what it means and I I could solve that problem :frowning:

Hi,

I have experienced the same scenario in the past. As far as I can remember, I think the problem has to do with yast being unable to start the module in charge of the online updating (online_update) while there is a process performing the same task (that in the background related to the orange warning icon).

I think I terminated the already loaded task (right click the orange icon and close option) and then, yast online_update loaded smoothly.

Give it a try.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. I just did according to your suggestion.

  1. Updating via Yast => Software update => Packets => Update only if newer now works.

  2. However trying to update via Yast => Online update still doesn’t.

  3. Just in case I would have forgotten that earlier, I selected Yast => Configure online update and executed it. An update server was added to my list (in which my guess is that it already was present… which was seemingly not detected)

  4. Problem persists : “Error while creating client module online_update”

Did you ignore any dependencies recently when installing something through YaST?

Dependency errors caused a similar problem with my system a while back.

Try opening another YaST applications, for example: The Package Manager (Software Management).

If you get a similar module error, please post it.

In fact, yes. While I cannot remember exactly what, it was something that :

“You have package uuuu version x.y.z.t and installation of package vvvv needs uuuu version x.y”, so I assumed it was safe to ignore.

I shall try your suggestion as soon as I get back home (I am away for a while).

Thank you and cheers !

One of the most detrimental things you can do in YaST is ignore a dependency, especially with something like a Zypper of YaST package. This can cause a program to run without it’s needed dependencies. The better bet is to not install the program at all, and try to see if a missing repository, or incorrect version of a repository may be causing the issue. Ignoring the dependency almost always makes the problem even worse because now the package is installed, but it can’t get what it needs to run, as in the case of YaST here. I had a similar problem with YaST package dependencies, and was forced to reinstall OpenSUSE 11.0. That does not mean that is the case here, just that it might be one of the only ways to completely fix the problem. If you do decide to reinstall, make a post saying you will: I can give you a walkthrough of how to reinstall, but still save all of your important files and documents, as well as save many of the major configurations you have for your system. That should make the reinstall much easier if you decide to do so.

Hope all goes well.
