I used to have and run a copy from Fedora but it stopped working today so I searched and found a openSuse version but got the same error when starting
I might guess that there was a lib update that causes it but don’t see where any gtk libs were updated (but may be wrong)
error gnubg:24117): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated

(No game) The program ‘gnubg’ received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was ‘BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)’.

the alternative backgammon apps are much inferior to this so they are not viable alternatives

my guess is that gnubg is using old code which is no longer
supported by current systems, witness: http://tinyurl.com/6g6snol
certainly it is highly unlikely to be an openSUSE problem or anything
we here could help you sort through…so suggest you nose around here
http://www.gnubg.org/documentation/doku.php and see if you can find a
place to log a bug…or someone who can give you a workaround or maybe
join a gnubg forum or mail list… or . . .

DenverD did you fully read my query?
“my guess is that gnubg is using old code which is no longer supported by current systems,” possibly but since it worked fine after my up’ing to 11.4 and KDE 4.6.1 (which I would call “current systems”) your guess can’t be correct. Possibly an upgrade yesterday affected something but it isn’t obvious to me what it could be.
“certainly it is highly unlikely to be an openSUSE problem” since the app was packaged for 11.4 (note: it was not available in 11.3) and in the games repo Games - openSUSE the obvious assumption is that it should work and since games appears to be an official repo then it should be an openSUSE issue.
“or anything we here could help you sort through” maybe I’m wrong but isn’t this what forums are for to help sort me through problems?

RESOLVED - cause was not including the 32bit Nvidia drivers when compiling the latest version. Discovered they were missing when running GoogleEarth, when it says “unknown graphics card” and doesn’t display the globe it means the 32bit gpu drivers are missing. And for whatever reason the 64bit version of Gnubg requires 32bit graphics drivers.
DenverD - no problem, and thanks for responding
