Error during Install

Trying to install on an older Dell D600 laptop. During the install process on the system probing screen I get the following error message:

Unable to create repository from URL ‘cd:/’

Then it provides some details.

Details:
|] Valid metadata not found at specified URL{s}

I’m not a computer guy - just trying to set up for my son. Any ideas what is wrong?

Welcome to openSUSE forums.

Are you installing from liveCD, DVD or other?
When booting the CD or DVD will offer an option to check the media have you done this?
Where did you obtain the media from?
If over the internet have you checked the md5sum on the download?

Thanks for the response…to answer your questions…

Installing from downloaded DVD.
Haven’t checked the “media” during boot…will try that.
Obtained download from OpenSUSE website using Limewire
Not really sure what md5sum is…sorry…as my moniker indicates I’m not real tech savvy.

I don’t trust a dld of the openSUSE DVD via Limewire.

It sound like a corrupt DVD. You should put the DVD into your DVD drive and start to boot from it. One of the boot menu list items is “Check Installation Media”. Select that option, let it finish and report what happened. That will test whether it’s a corrupt DVD. It takes a fairly long tome be patient.

to elaborate on what swerdna has stated, It is important to establish that the install media is not corrupted.

rubbish in, rubbish out.

Ran the check media and received an error message:

Error reading sector 245824. This CD-ROM is broken.

So I guess I have a bad download. Time to start over…uuuggghhh.

the download may be ok, and just the disk is bad…check here to
learn how to test the download (with checksums)…and, if it IS bad
how to repair it (with bit torrent) without doing another complete
