Hello I am using opensuse 11 and I installed a kernal update today 28 Oct. and upon rebooting I select open suse on /dev/sda5 but I get Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue…
I have 2 other distros installed and that is how I am typing this now. Ubunto and Fedora are the other distros.
I do not know what the numbers of the new kernal are, for example 2.16 etc. and I do not know how to edit menu.lst. from within Ubunto or Fedora.
I am a complete beginner, please help me!
Thank you.
With boot loader do use Ubuntu Fedora or opensuse

Hello when my PC starts I get a black screen and the main distro is Ubunto but i scroll down all the time and select opensuse.
Update: From within the Fedora distro I can see the other 2 distro files mounted. I open the opensuse file and see the menu.lst file but it has a cross and i can’t edit this file from a GUI perspective.
This is how my partitioning looks like:

The file menu.lst has restricted permissions. You can only edit it as root. Try that in Fedora. Fedora has some extra complications associated with Security Enhanced linux. If it still won’t allow to edit as root, do it from Ubuntu.
Another alternative is to repair the openSUSE bootloader but that will probably overwrite whatever bootloader is in the master Boot Record at the moment (??).
I did see the menu.lst file in fedora but i can’t edit it.
bootloader? do you mean GRUB?
please help me, i am frusrtated here and i need a how to fix error 15 after a kernel update for dummies tutorial.
Thank you so much.
I don’t want to break your multiboot with the other distros.
So some exploratory questions first:
Which distro’s bootloader is the one that comes up and gives you the start menu from which you can choose Fedora, Ubuntu or Suse?
And:
Please boot into that distro and post here the file menu.lst from that distro.
Which distro’s bootloader is the one that comes up?
it’s UBUNTO
and here are the contents of menu.lst
menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.
default num
Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
You can specify ‘saved’ instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
is the entry saved with the command ‘savedefault’.
WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not use ‘savedefault’ or your
array will desync and will not let you boot your system.
default 0
timeout sec
Set a timeout, in SEC seconds, before automatically booting the default entry
(normally the first entry defined).
timeout 10

Hides the menu by default (press ESC to see the menu)
#hiddenmenu

Had the same problem with my last kernel update. Solution was quite easy. In your menu.lst change the openSUSE entry from:
title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.16-0.1 (on /dev/sda5)
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25.16-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_HM250JIS15YJD0P820637-part5 resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent showopts vga=0x314
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.25.16-0.1-default
savedefault
boot
to:
title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.16-0.1 (on /dev/sda5)
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_HM250JIS15YJD0P820637-part5 resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent showopts vga=0x314
initrd /boot/initrd
savedefault
boot
If that works do the same for failsafe-openSUSE…
Thank you so much!
It worked! I see green again!
