I installed the above unit with the Epson Workforce 1100 Gutenprint 5.2.9 simplified driver under 13.1. Connection is via
USB.
When printing a test page, the printer prints empty pages until running out of paper. Does anyone have an idea as to
where I made a mistake? Is ther a more appropriate driver?

Try using the Epson (proprietary driver packages). They can be obtained from here

PS: This includes drivers for the scanner too.
thanks, I had already installed that driver, but forgot to make it known in CUPS, too. Yast by itself does not suffice.
In that config the printer prints pages of garbage, so beware!
Now, my printout is a little light in color, but that seems to be caused by local printer setup issues.
