and I guess if we say you need to remember if you installed the 32 or 64 bit Suse; Suse uses the 3.1 LSB and uses the rpm version of gutenprint

Also try here

I find the Gutenprint driver’s page alignment is messed up.

i have an epson sx400 and have tried gutenprint without success. however, i did something and now i am not sure how to continue. i tried to change my model to represent mine and found that there is not one for either an sx400 (or any sx*) or the tx400(again not for any tx*). my printer, when it responds at all (seldom) prints out page after page of what appear to be random numbers with random spaces and rc’s thrown in for fun.
does anyone know how to get the printer to work with Opensuse? can anyone point out or make a guide for us suckers who bought one with the understanding that epson would support linux? i have found a good guide for umbutu(?) but not for suse and there are some differences in how they work as far as i can tell(please not my status as ‘puzzeled penguin’)
thx for your help!

Open printing does have this model driver.
OpenPrinting database - Printer: Epson Stylus SX400

Try this howto, it uses gutenprint latest set of printers drivers for CUPS. hope it will help you.

howto: Installing printer through CUPS (gutenprint set of drivers)

well there is some interesting information there, but i still cannot get my printer up and running. the guide was good but for a t10/t20 printer…that is not mine, but it should basically be the same idea. anyway, found a local cups print page that has some info i will be reading tomorrow. however, i do wonder why my driver is following: Epson Stylus Scan 2000. this makes little sense to me either because i am using an epson stylus sx400/tx400 and there is no driver that reflects that. suse ‘suggests’ the above driver, but it doesn’t make sense to me.

oh, i should mention that one page did print correctly (almost had a block party i was so excited!), but upon a retry it didn’t respond though i have a ‘job completed’ entry in my cups page.
will be back tomorrow to try out again. good night!

there seem two different directions for you to go;

stay with gutenprint or try the drivers that Epson offer;

that gilap suggested in his post of 18th March

Download All-in-Ones [AVASYS CORPORATION]](http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do)

perhaps if you tell us if you are running 32bit or 64bit Suse too

I also face this problem, one page print, after that no more prints. and CUPS shows completed job. So what i did is, press the power button of the printer and then restart it at the mean time and then tried it, and it works for me.
Just give this a try. Hope will work. Not sure about your mentioned one. But it worked for me.

here is someone got their printer going on the epson drivers

[ubuntu] [SOLVED] Trouble printing with Epson Stylus SX400 - Ubuntu Forums](http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=903905)

they use Ubuntu so packages end in .deb instead of .rpm which is what opensuse

if you really want your printer to work quickly and well;

get turboprint; will cost you a few euros; but it will drive you printer beautifully

http://www.turboprint.info/

and you can see they support your printer

http://www.turboprint.info/printers_Epson.html

save yourself pain; get turboprint; it installs itself

i tried this too (am also a windows user…this is normal behavior there^^) but to no avail. not sure what you mean with ‘Not sure about your mentioned one’.

as to my version i am using 32bit. i have tried the umbutu thing and don’t really want to pay for a program that has a work around when i could theoretically do it myself. it worked once and that means it has to work again^^ i will try whatever you folks think would be good and answer all questions, but this printer has got to work!!

just a bit of an update…i don’t know how but my printer now works quite well. i did a mixture of the suggestions above and it started working. quite surprised myself…remnants of windows flashing through my head, but there it was pure luck and here i just did the right combination of things. wish i knew what i had done to help others out, but i would suggest following the above suggestions in different orders and eventually it should work:P

ps: thanks to all who helped me in my time of need!

I always get my Epson SX400 (and before that the DX7400) to work like this. This has worked on Suse 11 and 11.1

Download the appropriate driver from avasys Download*All-in-Ones [AVASYS CORPORATION]](http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do).

Go to the terminal and extract the pipslite file with this command as su

rpm -U pipslite-X.X.X-X.rpm

Make sure your printer is turned on and (still as su) enter

pipslite-install

Start CUPS, and click “Administrator” -> “Add Printer” and enter a name -> continue

Choose
Epson Inkjet Printer #1 (Photo Image Print System Lite)
-> continue

choose Epson from the Menu and click continue
choose the “Epson Photo Image Print System Lite” Driver and click add.
Enter root password and setup you default printer options.

This is it. It takes less than 5 minutes.

I forgot to mention, for tools like nozzle check etc, use

escutils

it runs from the terminal

escutils -n = nozzle check

  • c = print head cleaning
  • i = ink level check

Good info. I must have a look at this. :slight_smile:
