Have you installed Gutenprint? . There have been several updates
lately that added new scanners/printers. Also check to the avasys site
(http://avasys.jp/eng/) This site has a Perfection V500 PHOTO listed
as supported. Follow the steps and download there driver. i use there
version of ISCAN to drive my old Epson CX6600 MFP with no issues
Hope this helps you.

[openSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, x86_64] KDE 4.3.4 release 2,
Intel Core 2 Dual E7200, 4 GB RAM, GeForce 8400 GS, 320GB Disc (2)
if you yoou still have a problem
dwonload your x86-64 driver
RPM 64bit package
iscan-2.23.0-3.x86_64.rpm 389 779 bytes
iscan-plugin-gt-x770-2.1.1-2.c2.x86_64.rpm 196 133 byte
and install it in way you like
personally I make local directory with rpm’s and add repository with plain rpm’s
>sudo zypper ar /mylocalrepo mylocalrepo
>sudo zypper in iscan, iscan-plugin-gt
I want to install ‘in advance’ this Epson V500 scanner before buying it, so I know it should work. Not winning. I have downloaded from the Avasys site & installed via Yast2 Software Manager the 3 required thingies:
iscan 2.28.1-3.ltdi7
iscan-data 1.13.0-1
iscan-plugin-gt-x770 2.1.2-1
But cannot seem to install the scanner. Yast2-Scanner shows initially
epkowa No scanner recognized by this driver
Add shows 2 relevant entries in the comprehensive scanner list
Epson Perfection V500 Photo : (Package sane-backends) This scanner is not supported by the driver epson2. (USB-ID 0x04b8:0x0130) [supported by the epkowa backend plus non-free interpreter]
Epson Perfection V500 Photo : Third-party Image Scan driver software from Avasys required. Driver epkowa should provide good functionality. (USB-ID 0x04b8:0x0130) [requires DFSG non-free iscan-plugin-gt-x770, overseas version of the GT-X770]
Selecting the 2nd as looking more appropriate and clicking Next seems to proceed OK, but returns to the intial screen showing just
epkowa No scanner recognized by this driver
The nub: How can I get this scanner installed & recognised, please?! Do I have to have it actually plugged in?
TIA Lewis Smith

Probably, that’s what the epkowa error messages says, that it sees no scanner.

The nub: How can I get this scanner installed & recognised, please?! Do I have to have it actually plugged in?
Absolutely. It must be connected. FWIW, I’ve never had any problem using the Avasys software when required. If you have a laptop with openSUSE installed, maybe you can take it to the shop, and trial the scanner there before purchasing.
Thanks to both robin_listas & deano_ferrari for replying. Especially the encouraging remarks about the Avasys s/w. I shall buy the scanner, plug it in & try again. I suppose Suse will pick up the Avasys s/w.
Basic (silly?) question: iscan seems to be the scanning program. Do you have to use it, or should XSane - which is good - work with the scanner once installed?
I know it would be easier to buy something in the XSane ‘supported’ list, but this V500 scanner seems to be highly regarded by its users for one of the things I want to do: scan slides & negatives. If the worst comes to the worst, I have an OS X iBook with which it should work

Basic (silly?) question: iscan seems to be the scanning program. Do you have to use it, or should XSane - which is good - work with the scanner once installed?
That’s a good question. IIRC, when I had an Epson CX500 (multifunction printer), I think I could only use iscan successfully with the Avasys driver, but things may have changed.
Success at last, and I note here how one arrives for the benefit of others.
http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/ is the first step.
- In the “Download menu” section click the Scanner graphic link.
- On the subsequent Scanner/Linux Driver page, click the Perfection V500 PHOTO radio button.
- Complete the little ‘Questionnaire’ section.
- ‘Next’ button at bottom of page
- Read carefully “What Image Scan! for Linux packages do I need to install in order to use my Epson scanner?”.
Download for Perfection V500 PHOTO data package iscan-data-1.13.0-1.noarch.rpm
Download for Perfection V500 PHOTO core package iscan-2.28.1-3.ltdl7.i386.rpm or iscan-2.28.1-3.ltdl7.x86_64.rpm
and the relevant plugin iscan-plugin-gt-x770-2.1.2-1.i386.rpm or iscan-plugin-gt-x770-2.1.2-1.x86_64.rpm
Install the three packages in that order.
Connect the V500, and go through the Yast2 Scanner ‘Add’ process. Mine showed 2 slightly different entries for the V500, of which I picked the 2nd as looking most likely.
iscan is indeed the dedicated scanning application. Fire it up from the graphics menu - and you can indeed scan from the V500! The program is utterly different from its Win/Mac equivalent. XSane sees the scanner, but behaves too eratically to use; so one is stuck with iscan, but I criticise it not.
My advice to future -protect oneself is keep the 3 downloads safe somewhere. But I would still start with the Avasys/Epson site in case something has been updated.
Good scanning Lewis Smith
Thanks for sharing your success with this
FWIW, I’ve had experience with a few Epson multifuntion printer/scanner models over the past several, and all have been easy to configure and use.
