Please help: I have: openSUSE 11.3 (i586)AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-56 Linux 2.6.34-12-desktop i686 openSUSE 11.3 (i586)
I am trying to find a driver for epson NX420. I first went to Driver: epson-nx420 | OpenPrinting - The Linux Foundation but the x85 64 bit only comes in DEB, the instructions do not pertain to SUSE because it’s RPM based. Theoretically I can download alien to convert the .deb to an rpm but you have the potential to have it put libraries in the wrong places…or have dependencies you can’t find under SUSE. Besides that - I would have to deinstall other stuff to install alien in Yast am I’m too scared to screw up my system.
I downloaded Driver packages: x86 32 bit: 1.0.0 (RPM for LSB 3.2) = Filter ERROR
Then I went to url EPSON Download Center
downloaded both versions of printer drivers for linux.
DON"T WORK = Stylus NX420 02-07-2012

epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.1.2-1lsb3.2.src.rpm
Install ERROR!epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.1.2-1lsb3.2.src.rpm - no details
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.1.2-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm
Installs
Two Choices:
1… -escpr 1.1.2-1…NX420-epson-inkjet-printer-escpr.ppd.gz= BLACK PAGE
2… 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 …nx420_Series-epson-driver.ppd = BLACK PAGE
A quick search online suggests that there is a known problem with a particular ghostscript version. I note you’re running openSUSE 11.3. I would strongly suggest upgrading as that is now EOL.
In the above thread I linked to, the users found that the Avasys driver worked again after updating ghostscript. (IMHO, the easiest way will be just to update to 12.1)
CUPS Gutenburg NX400 just spits out white pages.
From ftp.pbone.net ghostscript-library-8.70-15.1.1.src.rpm OpenSuSE 11.X 29381996 Get an install errors just like all the others above.
Should I get another printer? I already tried all avenues suggested.
Emailed Epson (desperate fool that I am) since no FAQ but I know what they are already going to say - :’( that they don’t support it.
T0 sum the entire saga I wrote:

there is no CUPS for the NX420 so I tried the CUPS Gutenburg NX400 just spits out white pages.

Should I get another printer? I already tried all avenues. But it won’t be an Epson if don’t even have a printer for a fairly new printer of less than three years.
The big problem is that you’re using openSUSE 11.3 which is now ‘end of life’. Anyway, I note that the printing repo still has packages for 11.3, so you could try adding this repo
No my problem didn’t go away - it got worse! Brand new INSTALL 12.1 and guess what (as I madly twiddle my fingers and laugh hideously) …
Neither Driver: epson-nx420 | OpenPrinting (32-bit_ nor the Epson Inkjet Printer Driver (ESC/P-R) does not even list Epson NX420!!!
aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhh!
And what’s even CRAZIER is that when I type in search box for “ghost” to try to load ghost script onto it instead it save " drivers not found" yet when I check the install packages, Ghostscript is listed.
Gee, I only havd 12.1 for 2 hours and I might as well go back to 11.3 if 12.1 can’t even read a simple driver that is installed.
I am very disappointed. Probably wouldn’t do no good to even further try 12.1 {SIGH}
I tried Ubuntu on a USB stick and installed and printed OK the Epson NX420. I didn’t need a new printer - I needed a different version of linux. Trying Ubuntu today and will try #! later and see which one I like best.
Method 2:
You may check if you have the latest drivers installed for the device. You may refer to the below link for getting the latest drivers and check EPSON NX420 Driver
No, it won’t help. Not only is this an old thread, and the OP is probably long gone, but the links you’ve provided do not lead to any Linux driver for the NX420.
