epiphany has no icon

on my PC=Dell latitude E6510, RAM=8Gb, GPU=GT218 NVS 3100M, CPU=i7 Q 720 @ 1.60GHz, OS=opensuse 13.2 KDE= 4.14.6
I downloaded epiphany, the web browser for gnome, I use KDE, but looking for it in lizard>applications>internet>web browsers I found only “web browser web” with a foil as icon and no epiphany name and icon, how can I have the proper voice with icon??

Right click on the “Lizard”, Edit Applications and navigate to Internet / Web Browser (the Epiphany) and click on the grey icon, then choose whatever icon you wish.

You can also rename things from there and change startup / shortcut settings.

…ok it works, but, beeing an opensource project, its icon should be in the system icons…:slight_smile: why it is not??

I had not noticed the missing icon, though I have occasionally used epiphany.

You are wrong, however, about the name. My understanding is that the name was changed from “epiphany” to “Web” several years ago. So the name is there. I have no idea why they decided to make that name change, but they did.

The .desktop file specifies “web-browser” as icon, which is not included in the epiphany package.
Maybe this is expected to be part of your desktop’s icon theme? The icon will probably show up if you run GNOME or configure KDE to use the GNOME icon theme…

They (GNOME) did that in 3.6 with many applications: Totem is now called “Videos”, evince is now called “Document Viewer”, nautilus is called “Files”, and so on.
Apparently they think that GNOME users get too confused when they find “Totem”, “Evince”, and “Nautilus” in their application menu and need to have explicit names like “Videos”, “Document Viewer”, and “Files”.

I don’t understand why they don’t just display the “GenericName” instead of the “Name”, like KDE does (can be configured there though, of course).
This is a freedesktop standard.

And the executables themselves are still called “epiphany”, “totem”, and “nautilus” anyway…

…bad gnome idea I think, …this is why I cannot find the application named file that open when I click on dropbox icon…:slight_smile:

No. This is no configuration thing.
The .desktop files specify “Web” and “Files” as “Name”, so KDE displays “Web” and “File” if you tell it to show the names of course.

But you can modify the .desktop file manually with a text editor, or use KDE’s menu editor to change the name (this should even affect GNOME then… :wink: ).
