Enhanced screen goes to white

i just installed suse and am peaking around. When i click to enhance the desktop it goes to a white screen and i can not see any thing. I have to do a power button shut down.
Suggestions?

Can you tell us which version of openSUSE you have installed? What video card do you have (ATI by chance)?

You may need to disable the desktop effects and install a proprietary video driver first. With more info, someone may be able to guide you more specifically.

Similar threads and useful info to start with:

the suse system is 11.1

the video card is on-board. this is on an older Gateway P3

after rebooting twice, it fixed itself and turned off the Desktop Effects.

I will read those threads to see what i can find pertaining to my system.

thanks

i had similar issues with KDE desktop on Ubuntu. I could still see the GUI there though…

This command will get you more info concerning graphics:

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --gfxcard

If you don’t need the eye candy, then best left disabled anyway.

sax2 says the card is an intel82810E CGC
it put the resolution at 1152X864 XGA

does that sound right? It does see the correct monitor. I may have to boot up on W2K to double check the card in there…
