Encoderrs and Decoders

Hi,
I want to install

  1. mp3 encoder and decoder
  2. Ogg vorbis encoder and decoder
  3. AAC encoder and decoder
  4. mp3 sorround encoder and decoder
  5. AC3 encoder and decoder
on OpenSUSE 10.3 . I am new to OpenSUSE and ,in general, ignorant about Linux.

It might be noted that some of the above encoder and decoders may be proprietary.I do not plan to distribute them lol!

Also,is it possible to get music/audio files in raw(PCM samples… not uncompressed form…not the encoded and then decoded ones) form?

all the mentioned are part of libavcodecs which is part of ffmpeg and mplayer/mencoder. For stand-alone encoders, get LAME, Vorbis, Aften, FAAC or neroAacEnc/neroAacDec

yes you can play RAW samples with mplayer

Could anyone tell me where to get the softwares(the encoders and the decoders) and how to install them?
Other (other than aforementioned ones) popular coders would also do.

Thanks a million

Is it possible to get 6 channel raw samples from anywhere?

get them from the Packman repository

Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE

no idea about raw samples

Thanks again!

I, too, am trying to install the OGG codecs. I saw your note about libavcodecs, but cannot seem to find the repository. I go to YAST, Software Repositories, and I get to a page that has an automatic update program. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your help.

libavcodec is not a separate program. It is a library which is part of ffmpeg and mplayer so if you install those, you’ll automatically have it. libavcodec is a collection of encoders and decoders for use by ffmpeg/mencoder/mplayer and ofther if those are compiled against it

for ogg stuff (which is NOT a codec but a container) get the Vorbis packages

my guess is you just need to read some more…
go to this page:

search for “Repositories - openSUSE-Community” and read/FOLLOW that
section…

THEN, scroll down just a LITTLE and read/follow the section “A guide
on installing restricted formats”
