enabling hot keys on hp pavilion

i have been searching high and low for a way to configure the hotkeys on my laptop(hp pavillion dv 8000) as these keys are a wonderful feature i would like to be able to get them working but they refuse to register. attempted to grab the keys with compiz in order to get key codings to add the bindings to my config but nothing seems to be able to register them. any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated

using openSuSe 11.0 with kde 4.1.3, not sure how much of a difference it makes^_^

A number of the buttons on later model HP laptops do not generate any keycodes,
but use the WMI (Windows Management Interface). There is a Linux driver for this
mode, but not in 2.6.27!

You can see if your buttons generate codes by pressing CTRL/ALT/F1 to open an
alternate console. Log in there and enter the command showkey. When you press a
key, any code the key generates will be printed. You return to the graphical
console with CTRL/ALT/F7.

i appreciate the quick reply. out of curiousity what version supports these drivers in case this is the cause?

tested the keys. happy to report all but 2 are already recognized without any drivers at all^_^ configured using all the recognized keys

I think you need kernel 2.6.28 or later, which means openSUSE 11.2 (out in
November 2009).
