Email scanner

Hope this is the right forum for this. Anyway i just installed openSUSE 11 on my old thinkpad laptop and its all working fine. I’m gonna be using this laptop mainly for email and i was looking for a decent automated email scanner. I know of clamav but from what i’ve seen its detection rates aren’t too good. I was hoping one of the more mainstream companies might have a solution but they all seem to be geared towards mailservers. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Practically all the virus signatures in scanners are those of WIndows viruses. That’s why mailservers that pass on mail for Windows machines need them. You don’t need this for Linux mail. Linux mail programs are not so stupid as to allow to user to execute attachments directly. The user would have to be conned into making the attachment executable and to run it.

Better spend your effort keeping up to date with security updates and being careful with where you go on the web, because closed source products like flash and adobe reader are a weak point. Just today it was announced that there is a hole in adobe reader that could be taken advantage of by specially crafted PDF files.

If you do shuttle out some Email to PC users that you didn’t originate, I would advise just using an online scanner. But if you still want a localized product you can look into something like Avira Antivir.

Check out kaspersky, it may offer you the peace of mind you are after.

Yeh i’m not so much worried about infecting myself as i am of passing something bad along to someone else. I’d like to be able to prevent such a scenario if possible.
