Email notifications and appoints from Jotact calendar not working.

Using kontact version 5.3.0.

Steps leading to the problem
Open a day view in Calendar
left click and select a period of time
right click the selection and left click ‘new event’
Type in ‘test’ for the title
right click the tab for attendees
right click ‘select attendees’
type in partial name in search window
select attendeeName
right click ok

The event is not saved on the calendar.
The email to the attendee fails.
The error message says:

Failed to transport message. Message sending failed since the following recipients were rejected by the server: attendeeFirstName attendeeLastName <email@mydomain.com>(The server responded: "<attendeeFirstName attendeeLastName=<email@mydomain.com>>: “@” or “.” expected after “attendeeFirstName”)

I tried creating an event. Saved it. Edited the event by adding an attendee as outlined above. It blew out the event and the email failed.
