Email client ... server?

I’m looking for a email client that also acts as a server. I’m not quite sure what I’m looking for.

I …

  • own a lot of email accounts from different domains.]would like to access one place remotely]able to synchronize with popular clients (optional)*]want it to automatically retrieve any new mails

Is there a piece of software that does all of the above?

I’m not sure what you are looking for either. A server will receive mail sent to it via smtp protocol. To me it seems your mail is stored on different provider’s servers, right?

Probably you could use fetchmail to collect mail from all your accounts. Locally you could have sendmail or postfix as a server which would send outgoing mail. Have a look at procmail to distribute locally. As a client pick anything you like. If this doesn’t fit your needs we need an exact description of what you are planning to accomplish.

welcome to open source and openSUSE…

your requirements are not infinitely clear to me, but my Thunderbird
goes to several different domain mail servers where i have mail
accounts and looks for new mail under every ID/password i give it…

it does this automatically upon boot and every ten minutes thereafter
(configurable), and then collects that mail and offers it to me for
reading…

i can set it to just fetch a copy (and leave the original on the
distant server [which i do at, gmail, for example] or i can set it to
clear the distant in-box after fetching…

“able to synchronize with popular clients (optional)” i do not know
what that means…Thunderbird IS a client that acts kinda like your
own local server…

perhaps you are looking for an Out-look/-house type cpu sucker? some
folks use Evolution, but think it smells too much like Redmond…

goldie

And when you are a KDE user, my Kmail does about the same as goldies’ Thunderbird.

and probably faster, with less resources…does it also ‘do’ nntp?

goldie

I do not use nntp. Took a fast look, but can not find anything in that direction in its config windows. But I use Kmail within Kontakt. Kontakt can contain several items, I use also the addressbook, the agenda and the RSS tool. There is also a News item that can be switched on. Most probably what you are looking for.

Which would probably fire up Knode, the stock KDE news client. It
also will connect to several news servers.
