I updated openSUSE 12.2 a few minutes ago and now I just get booted to grub rescue mode, saying the ELF header is smaller then expected… :
I have no idea what to do, please help…
I am thinking that at minimum, the new Grub 2 loader, when installed, is corrupted for some reason or just incomplete. In such a case where you tried a real openSUSE upgrade and it has failed, you could first try to reload grub 2 and then failing that, do a clean install, but select a custom partition where you use all of your old partitions as they are, but only format the root / and not your /home which you just mount as-is. This keeps all of your personnel settings and files inside /home, but does require you reload all applications and lose some system wide settings. I use this method to switch to the newest openSUSE version all of the time.
Have a look at this link concerning a grub 2 reinstall.

Thank You,
Alright, thanks for the reply… Didn’t realize it was so serious even…
What a depressing ride openSUSE was, read so many good things about it. Guess it was just bad luck… Wifi basically not working, I get errors when I shutdown, and now this… Needless to say it failed the trial run…
Without exact details its hard to know what went wrong for you, but I simply don’t use the built-in upgrade, but rather chose a clean install every time. Consider that people that have good luck with doing an upgrade most often don’t report in and so we see only when it does not work alright. The problem as I see it is there are just too many hardware/software configurations to make sure the upgrade will always work just right. Most effort at first for each new release is spent with completely new installations and don’t include many upgrades. Of course, anyone can report a bug in the installation process if you like. As for other situations that might arise when you get past the install, I suggest a kernel version upgrade to get the latest hardware drivers that you can find. I also suggest trying out a LiveCD you can boot and run from from a disk to see what you will get (with a clean install) on your PC. I have several PC’s running openSUSE and they all work right, but I hear and see the things that might be a problem and keep away or fix them so that everything will work alright.
Thank You,
