Edit: DO NOT USE THIS REPO YET, YOU MAY RUN INTO SERIOUS TROUBLE !!
Hi all,
For those who waited for GNOME3 to appear in the stable repos:
Index of /repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/3.0/openSUSE_11.4
Enjoy
Ive added it to the repo , how do I get it installed ?
Haven’t found out yet.
Does a zypper dup do the trick ?
Apparently, it does! I just did a zypper dup and had no dependency issues. Just make sure that the Gnome stable repo has the same priority as the other ones.
best,
Javier
Cool, happy it worked.
Well I am in trouble here.
I added the repo then did
zypper dup
After the installation completed I tried to logout (from Gnome 3 shell) but couldn’t. A notification appeared saying “cannot find gnome save session” or something similar.
Then pressed ctrl+alt+F2 then used the reboot command as root
After booting the new looking login screen appeared but after typing my password when I tried to login it said “something has gone wrong” and the only option which I see there is logout.
Please help.
I have created thread for this please reply there. I shoul have done that in the first place. I just got hassled
Here is the thread
Cannot login after upgrading to Gnome 3
Is it possible to install it as a separate desktop, ie. selectable from the login screen. So I have the option to choose Gnome2 or Gnome3 ? If so, How would I do it ?
Hi!
I just made the “zypper ar repo”, “zypper ref + zypper dup” and reboot my laptop. Gnome 3 doesn’t work because some problem with my accel vga hardware. Then reboot from root shell account (it’s impossible to use the “Off” gnome menu), nothing…
Then I install the nvidia driver (up today, I was running with nouveau driver), reboot but I have the same persistent problem…
Anyboy could help me, please?
Thanks a lot.

Same old problems here after upgrade to Gnome 3.
Is this an official repo ? If yes… what about some QA ?
Hi
No it’s still a work in progress acorrding to the developers… use at your own risk.
I updated my install from the live cd and it’s working fine, a few packages are orphaned, but it’s all working fine on my netbook so far.
i update to gnome 3 in yast (a little bit of work ) but work fine .
dont be lazy
It worked for the most part for me. I added the repository and I did a sudo zypper dup to download and install GNOME 3. I had to restart from the command line. I got the new GDM 3 and I logged into my desktop, but it said that GNOME 3 failed to load because I am using the nouveau drivers and it cannot enable the advanced graphics.
What should I do?

Yes, it’s an official repo. Yes it went through QA (but of course, users
are often the ones doing QA, this isn’t a ‘cathedral’ style software
development model), but apparently something got missed. It happens.
The repo’s been up for less than a day. It’ll get sorted out.

Thanks for clearing that up, Malcolm - I more or less assumed it was an
official repo because it isn’t in the home heirarchy, but it seems it
still has some issues.
Thanks for the clarification, maybe we need a sticky with this info since
we’re getting so many questions about it.

Removing the repo and doing a ‘zypper dup’ as root reverted it on my test
system.
Seems it isn’t quite ready yet.

I did this and it reverted back to the original GNOME 2.32. I think I am done with GNOME. I installed KDE 4.6.2 and it is fantastic. I am going to remove GNOME right now as a matter of fact.
