I’m a total beginner at this, but the wife just brought home a pile of Win
…m4v files. She threw these at me and asked if I could crop them to cut off
start and stop excess then save the shortened results back to mpeg4 format
for her. Well, I can play them with several players but…
Are there any options out there for manipulating the content of these files?
What I need to do is simple: find the desired start point and end point then
remove the trash parts from the file.
Avidemux (from the packman repo) will do what you want. Avidemux3 is the most recent and stable version.
You will be able to cut, edit without re-encoding the content.
.m4v and .mp4 are essentially the same container - just .m4v is idevice (iphone, ipod) friendly.

Thanks, Mark. Looks like just what I needed. Time for this old dog to learn
a few new tricks.
