So what’s your problem?
/etc/sysctl.conf IS owned by root, so you can only edit it as root.
Use “kdesu kwrite” f.e.
I really don’t want to go to a console for every file owned by root that I want to edit.
Is there an easier way ?
Andy
If you’re really uncomfortable with CLI, but you need to edit files owned by root, and assuming you’re using KDE you can just go to kicker (if you just came from Windows it’s analogous to “Start” i.e. the little green lizard profile in the bottom left corner of your screen) and click on Applications>System>File Manager>File Manager - Super User Mode then enter your root password. That will open Dolphin as su, and any text file file you click on will open in Kwrite and can be edited with su rights.
Caution: don’t think that routine use of Super User Mode whenever you use Dolphin is a good idea. It’s not ever a good idea to have those rights unless you need them. It’s too easy to get careless and/or absent minded and really F things up.
Yes, run “Dolphin (Super User Mode)” in System->File Management in the start menu.
If you open a file there, it will be opened as root then.
Or install this service menu:
Root Actions Servicemenu KDE-Apps.org
You can also download and install it from within dolphin by selecting Settings->“Configure Dolphin”->Services->“Download New Services…”
