Easiest way to upgrade to 4.1

Hi all,

What would be the best, safest, easiest way to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1 KDE?

I am trying 4.0 for the first time.

Thanks

Heeter

Add these repo’s
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.0
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_11.0
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factory_Desktop

disable any other kde4 repo’s you may have added earlier
make a copy of your .kde4 folder or even better re-name .kde4old (that has some settings you might want)
Using re-name will mean you start with a new .kde4 which will be better

Don’t expect it to be simple
You may have dependency issues
But use software management and filter by repo and select upgrade all in this list unconditionally.
You may not have packages in all 3 of the repo’s listed.

Report back if you are not sure

Awesome, Thanks

Will check in after I am done.

Thanks again,

Heeter

Some extra info:

Starting with a new .kde4 folder is best because the original kde4 desktop was quite different and cause all sorts of plasma issues upon upgrade. Most of us had to start again getting all our settings the way we like. There may be some settings you can re-use but I’m not sure I would bother.
I still keep a copy of my current working .kde4 folder, so if a update screws things up, I might be able to recover things.

Some packages may even be downgrades, that’s why say update all unconditionally.

Switching of auto check dependency whilst you select upgrade all just stops annoying pop-up messages until you have marked all.

If issues arise, try working thru them, you can fiddle away will choices as nothing happens until you accept (and then only if no dependency issues exist). Sometimes it’s just a matter of figuring it out.

don’t forget to add this repo also
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.0
if you don’t you will get a broken kde4.1

It was broken anyway Heeter - as of Yesterday 25th/9 we are all stuck with a Green swirl desktop. A fix is promised next week

The fix will be in the KDE 4.1.2 packages next week.

I had no problem after adding in the KDE QT/44 repo, ref the long “checkerboard” thread. Supposedly repo above was correct one to use; didn’t work for me. QT/44 did.

I have tried both repo’s with the latest issue as raised in this thread topic and so it seems have others. The problem persists.
So quite what you have different to us Mingus725 I don’t know. That’s assuming you ran the updates yesterday.

@caf4926 -

I don’t know. I last upgraded a couple of days ago, as I usually do (I’m a glutton for punishment, I guess). My libqt4 is an svn 4.4.2 while 4.4.1 is in the other repos. Possibly there are new updates in the last couple days which introduced another problem I haven’t seen yet.
