E17 - no more login possible

Hi,
I have E17 running here, upon a KDE-based-system
The E-stuff is moving a lot, stable release for 21.12.12

Since alpha8, now recently upgraded to beta1, I can not login anymore.

Logins to KDE and LXDE are still possible, opensuse12,2 here

Talk shortly:

I come to the KDM-Login-Screen, choose enligthenment, enter user and password, after 3 seconds I am back there, on the login-screen, no login to E17 possible.

As I said, newest E17 from /nightly-repo installed

Any idea?

Thanx
Martin

Martin,

I was just getting ready to ask the same question. I am running
openSUSE 12.1 and using the e17 version 0.17.0beta1-1.1 from the
X11:Enlightenment:Nightly repository. I had no problems until a couple
of day ago when an update would not let me log in to e17 anymore. I
could not find any error messages in dmseg or in .xsession-errors. I do
not know any where else to look and have been googling around without
any luck. If anyone has any suggestions I sure would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Eric

sounds to me like you two have discovered a bug which should be reported…

but, i don’t know exactly to where…have a look here and see if you can
figure out if it is an E17 problem (would hit all distros) or just an
openSUSE problem (like E17-Beta works great on *buntu):
http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Enlightenment

you could contact one of the guru’s listed on that page and ask them
where to lodge the bug…

also, there are four points of contact on that page…try one or all…

I submitted a bug 793566 “Can not login to e17 desktop environment” to
https://bugzilla.novell.com.

Eric

it would be good if “martinrehm” would now join that bug

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=793566

and confirm it exist on two different systems…

The bold parts indicate what is the problem. Nightly builds should never be expected to be stable, rather unstable.

So what action are you suggesting that the people using e17 from nightly
should do?

Eric

Use the stable repo Index of /repositories/X11:/Enlightenment:/Released (pick your openSUSE version). If you use the nightly builds you’re putting yourself in an environment that is still under heavy development.

read this post, just minutes old (in the opensuse-project mail list)
from one of the E17 developers:

Hi lizards fellows,

after years of development of E17, after years of E17 built for
openSUSE externally I’m glad I can say that E17 release is getting
near and it’s way to openSUSE is getting to an end.

Release is scheduled to December 21th 2012 and all packages needed for
the E are already accepted or waiting in the openSUSE submit queue for
review.

E17 is not the ultimate goal, but first step in accepting this live
part of opensource world ecosystem. You can find our future steps in
Todo list on wiki (see URL bellow).

To coordinate further efforts we formed group and provide (in this
time) needed social media access too. You can there find basic
information and information about progress.

We provide two repositories in OBS for E:

X11:Enlightenment:Factory

  • this repository contains packages, which were released and packages
    which are compiled against releases
  • this is the devel project where the packages goes to Factory from
    and is meant for users

X11:Enlightenment:Nightly

  • this repository follows SVN commits strictly, contains much more
packages, but can from time to time be broken same way as upstream
  • this is for EFL+E17 developers and testers

Have fun!

Thank you,

I understand that using the nightly builds is risky because it is
unstable. I just don’t see any other forums on openSUSE to ask
questions about using them. I am not complaining that it does not work,
I am just asking to see if anyone else has the same problem and if there
are any solutions available.

If this is not the correct forum to ask questions about the e17 nightly
build using openSUSE, can you suggest which one would be more appropriate?

Eric

Did not know about the /Factory-repo for E17, knew only the /nightly.
Up to know it worked all well.

So it seems to be considered to use the **more **stable versions, stable version of E17 up to now does not exist (“under heavy development”)

I’m gonna leave a comment in bugzilla

thank you

Martin

I switched it to the /factory-repo, downgraded all installed e17-packages and it is fine now.

The nightly builds are working for me again on openSUSE 12.1. I will
report it on Bugzilla.

Eric

So I gonna keep the factory-repo
like it is named, still experimental

I hope to meet a lot of people using E17
