DVD writer stopped working

I burned about a half dozen dvds/cds and all of a sudden I started getting a bunch of these when I put in a blank disk:

511.551052] sr 8:0:0:0: [sr0] Unhandled sense code
511.551064] sr 8:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
511.551076] sr 8:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Blank Check [current]
511.551089] sr 8:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: No additional sense information
511.551102] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0
511.551112] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

I can still mount already burned disks, but any attempts at writing fail.

Do you only have one OS to try it in?
Or could you boot a live cd that runs in RAM, like Parted Magic?

Nope, only have one OS on the computer. I did boot to the installation disk to check the drive, and that worked fine.

Try doing this:
Clear Temp Files at Boot - openSUSE Forums

Then reboot

It may help remaking the cable connections to the device and modo.

CD/DVD drives are not long lived compared to most hardware.

Already checked the cabling, and clearing /tmp didn’t change anything. Still getting sense messages.

Sounds like the typical “The death of a burner” (work in progress) to me.

//Edit:

At least, if there is actually something wrong with the device (not being able to burn $MEDIUM belongs to that category), if it were only the messages above, then they are normal on inserting a blank disc, as there is nothing to be found on them, though the drive tries of course.

Same messages occur when i.e. booting with an audio CD inserted (again, device is trying to find a file system on disc, which does not exist on an audio CD).

Replace the device. I’ve been wrestling the same error, switched identical drives with another machine, problem moved to the other machine. Replaced the drive, problem gone.

Ah. I’ve never looked when it works. Is there somewhere else to ook?
