What on earth do I have to do to watch a DVD?
I’ve installed the stuff from the Multimedia page (Codecs-gnome or
somesuch) and I know libdvdcss is installed. But neither Totem nor VLC
will play the DVD.
Totem just tells me a gstreamer plugin is missing, and VLC attempts to
play each file on the DVD individually.

Just get libdvdcss from the Videolan repo… then REMOVE it from
your repos. Add packman and get VLC or whatever (xine, mplayer, etc)
from the packman repo. My preference is to install libxine1* from
packman along with xine-ui, and I think that cures kaffeine as well,
but there is probably a newer kaffeine on packman as well.
Anyhow, that fixes things for me… try it.
i dunno…never had that problem. but just a suggestion…install a
package called “libdvdread”.or “libdvdnav” if you use xine and see if it
works then.

I’m having the same issues, the link to the thread helped a little,
Kaffiene looked like it tried to play the dvd but gave me a different
error(said I might not have the permissions, instead of saying xine
can’t play it)

I got the dvd playback to work. In the thread linked above there was a
link to another thread(10 steps to check for issues) and that was able
to help me solve the issue. I had too many packages installed from the
vlc repos(including xine) and after removing those I was able to
reinstall them all from packman and everything is working fine now.
