DVD drive stopped working in 11.3

Hi,

Seems that my DVD-RW drive has stopped working at some point. I am pretty sure it worked when I first installed OpenSUSE 11.3. I have also tested with couple of other DVD drives - most of the times any of the discs (DVD or CD) I throw in are not recognized, this is what I get in dmesg:

Maybe this happened when new kernel (2.6.34.7-0.5-default) was installed as security update but I am not sure. Today I installed yet a another kernel update (2.6.34.7-0.7-default) but the issue remains…

Does anyone else have the same problem? What could I do to fix this?

Can you boot install media from the drive?

Yes the installation DVD boots fine

What does this mean

I have also tested with couple of other DVD drives

All DVD drives stop working at some point. I/O error can be everything: bad medium, dirty or broken reader, bad cable, bad controller (on board). You’ll find out when you change the drive. I usually try to replace the cable first (although nowadays it’s more often the drive).

Well I installed other DVD drives I have. I was not able to read any discs with any of the 3 drives I have.

I have changed the cable and as I said tried 2 other drives. Also OpenSUSE installation medium boots fine. Just installed Ubuntu and it also reads discs fine with the same computer. It is just the Suse that does not work.

Indeed. In that case, try with another cable!

You may have stumbled in the same issue I have with a laptop. If so, see here for some workarounds.
