DVD/CD won't boot: Stops after "Loading..."

When I try to install OpenSuse 11.0, it stops immediately after booting (it seems, it can only read the boot sector but nothing else). The screen shows the following and nothing happens any more:

Loading…

This happens for both the CD and the DVD; I tried it with different drives too.

The computer is quite old. It has 512 MB RAM and a 800 MHz VIA CPU.

OpenSuse 10.3 DOES boot without any problem, as does Fedora 8 (both from DVD).

Can anyone help?

did you do an md5 checksum before burning ?

Yes, the MD5 sum matched exactly. I also recreated an ISO from the burnt disks and checked the MD5 again; it’s the same one as on the OpenSuse website.
